Hi I have a 1989 spectrum with a 1989 force 85 hp OB. when i got this boat it do about 29-30mph. After I install a power trim and tilt. The max speed I got is 30-33mph. Now my friend gave me a SE 200 sport hydrofoil, I read the spec, it said it is for motor up to 35hp. but will fit any think from 8-200 HP. I am wondering if it will work for my 85HP, it seem small after I put it on the motor to take a look. Now I have a questios.

1) can this SE200 sport work for me?
2) is the holes I am going to drill standard? If i later like to change to other model or brand of hydrofoil?
3) if it is not standard can i still drill new holes if i want to install other model or brand of hydrofoil?
4) if SE 200 sport is not good for my outboard, what is the best hydrofoil for my OB?

Thanks alot for answer.

Re: Hydrofoil question

What do you hope to accomplish by installing the hydro-foil? Does the boat have any handling problems you wish to correct? Are you aware that you MAY drop some top speed when you install it? Additionally, if it is too small, it will not do the job it was designed to do.

Most the hydro-foils I have seen have standard mounting hole spaces in a given size. Not sure about going to a larger one but I would bet the hole spacing is different. Yes, you can drill new ones, but really, how many holes do you want in your cavitation plate?

Personally, if it were my boat and did not have a problem, I would not bother with the hydro-foil. Certainly not the one given to you and probably not a larger one either.

Re: Hydrofoil question

Oh I did not know that it will reduce the top speed of boat. the reason why I want to install it is that I have a problem with weight balance on my boat during wot. I think it is call chine-walking. I thought the hydrofoil would also save fuel and increase top speed.

Re: Hydrofoil question

I'm not sure but I think a hydro-foil will increase the chine walking problem. One of the causes of chine walking is the hull riding too high and the hydro-foil will attempt to make it ride higher in the back.

There are some really knowledgeable guys on the general boating forum and you may want to ask about Smart Tabs. They make an inexpensive plastic set which may help.
