I am considering installing a String Ray hydrofoil on my 25hp Evinrude, it's on a 14ft aluminum fishing boat semi v hull....
Has anyone used one before? Are they worth the cash? Does it make a big difference?
Any input would be appreciated....

Re: Hydrofoil?

I suppose it depends on what your issues are now. If your boat is performing the way it's supposed to, leave well enough alone.

I had one on my 16 ft aluminum with 30 hp Johnson. I took it off as it slowed down the boat quite a bit. The boat worked just fine without it.

I have one that I install only for skiing and tubing on my 16 ft bowrider inboard. It keeps the nose of the boat going skyward and puts it on plane in 2/3 time. It does take off on top speed, but isn't significant at tubing and skiing speeds. The benefits outweigh the slower top end speed.

If I were to do it again and I soon will, I'd go with the smart tabs. There seems to be no down side to them! From what I see on this forum, Smart Tabs will get you faster on plane, little or no bowrise, lower planing speeds, very little lean in turns, and better top end...Can't really ask for more!
