Almost all the major auto manufafturers have hydrogen vehicles out there and running. There are two types, fuel cell and internal combustion (converted gas/diesel).

Hydrogen has two issues to overcome.

1. Infrastructure (filling stations).

2. Public perception. When the public heres hydrogen, they think nuke bomb.

I don't see outboards going to hydrogen in any less than 20 years. Alcohol is more likely. I see bigger boats incorporating fuel cells into the hull and either drive a prop or a jet pump.

DJ, don't forget about the tank problem. The size on a hydrogen tank giving the equivalant range to a gas-guzzling boat is going to be huge even if you do use a 10,000 psi tank. Getting hydrogen fueled cars into a 300 mile range is already a challenge.
I'm not saying the problem is insurmountable, just that it's a real significant issue.

Yes as said above infrastructure and tanks are a problem. If you had a good engine setup today to run on hydrogen where would you refuel. Hydgrogen, although a good clean fuel is bulkier power for gallon than standard petroleum fuels. Hydrogen has to kept as a super cooled liquid (like liquid nitrogen or liquid oxygen) in a Dewars flask (vacuum bottle) type tank. Or you have to generate hydrogen chemically with metal hydrides. Either way you have a complicated tanking and fueling setup that will take time to build. It probably would be most efficient in larger craft and not practical for a 16 foot fishing boat.
