Hydrolectric shift , no neutral

1969 85hp Johnson, I had the water pump replaced and now the motor won't shift into neutral. it starts in forward and will shift into reverse. When power is applied to green selenoid wire the engine shifts into neutral only if the forward wiring harness is disconnected. I hooked up a single pole switch to the green wire coming out of the control box but still no neutral. I am at a loss what to do. Any ideas appreciated.

If you can make it shift properly by disconnecting the harness and using a jumper wire, I would think the shift switch in the control box is not working properly.

Yes the dreaded shift switch. I guess I,ll have to wire up a toggle switch to change gears. Thanks

Use a volt meter or test light to check the voltage from the shift switch, could be a wiring problem from the switch to the engine.

The only thing I can say here is, for neutral you need power to the green wire only. For reverse you need power to both the green and blue wires together. For forward no power at all. Something may have happened when you pulled the g/c to change w/p.

I returnrd the boat to the mechanic that replaced the waterpump. Before he replaced the water pump there were no shifting problems afterwards there was no neutral. He took the lower unit off and found no problems. He replaced the unit and neutral worked!
