Will a 225hp outboard need a hydrolic steering system or can it run on a cable driven unit? I am a novice and have been told it will need to run on a hydrolic system and my boat is currently set up for a cable driven outboard. Any help is appreciated! Charlie

if you can fit Hydraulic, then do so, it is worth every cent regardless of HP and big motors need good cable steering, so go with the best, Hydraulic!

hydrolic is the best, then the no feed back rotary, is the minimum

Set up properly either will work just fine. A 225 doesn't "have to" have either.

However, a lot depends on the speed of the boat. You'll see some hydraulic systems that warn not to use them over 55 mph. High performance systems are fine. If you're using a push-pull cable system, a dual cable sytem is recommended over 55.

Most circle race boats (100 mph +) use the cable & pulley system.

Regular hydraulic steering is not "power" steering. Don't get the idea that it will be easier to turn the wheel, except to the extent that there is no friction loss from a cable or cables. Dual cable setups are kind of hard to steer for that reason. Also any boat where the installation requires more than two curves in the cable. Hydraulic oil doesn't care how many turns the hose makes. That's why it is used in yachts.

Also, hydraulic steering has valves that lock the rudder at whatever position it was when you last stopped turning the wheel. (No feedback). That means you don't have to develop arms like the Incredible Hulk to hold a course against torque steer.

Adding hydraulic steering to my 150HP was the best upgrade I have done to my rig.

I have hydrolic steering on 23WA w/200 hp and I really like. Would not without it.
