I have a Seastar hydraulic steering unit for my 115 hp OB and the oil is a little low. There is no problem with the steering action all I want to do is fill the unit up to the top. After removing the fill plug I can see the oil is down about 1/2 inch or so. Question-do I have to buy a quart of Seastar oil or is there an alternative oil I can use with out causing a problem.

Re: Hydrolic steering oil

If you helm is mounted at a angle it should be 1/2" from the hole so you may not need to add any.

You can get awau using run of the mill hydraulic fluid in a pinch, but I would recommend getting the correct stuff
The Seastar fluid is designed to be used in a marine environment where water contamination is a high possibility.
