Ok - As luck would have it - I now have a leak in my trim cylinder on the right side just as I am finishing putting my motor back together.

I suspect a wayward and bored 3 year old with a screwdriver may have gouged the rubber seal around the piston.

Does anybody know how to remove this thing short of buying the special tool or adjustable spanner wrench??

Thanks,
SM

That cap can be tight. The correct spanner could well prove to be the cheapest way to go.

any ideas where I might find one?

I have looked online for 1/2 hour and don't see one - nor the o-rings & seals for the cylinder.

Swamp. You might post the year and model of that motor. There is a complete reseal kit avail for my '98 Johnny 150, for $50.

I made a spanner originally for my Merc, but it workes OK on the Johnny as well. it is simply two pieces of 6" Angle iron, drilled on each end to accept a bolt. One end is bolted to the other piece of angle iron, the other end is drilled to receive a bolt that fits the trim cylinder end cap.

i have a '79 johnson 115 and i had to put in new scrapers, o-rings, etc......and i used a screw driver at an angle to go in a circular motion and hit it with the back of my hand a few times and it broke loose, then i used one screw driver straight up and down and used that screw driver and the trim pin to twist the caps..........after you get them screwed out high enough you can turn them with your fingers.

not the best way but i couldnt find my spanner

I have purchased a spanner on ebay. It seems to be decent quality and I have used on a number of old nasty, dirty tractor cylinders.
Good luck.

Spanner wrenches are cheap nowadays. Good investment for the tool box.

As stated, what model are we talking about here as far as parts go?
