1973 Mercruiser 140 I thought the starter was gone - replaced it and the motor still wouldn't turn over but instruction/troublestooting sheet that came with new one says check for hydrostatic lock. Ooops cylinders full of water - Likely because I recently replaced the water pump ergo higher pressure? which gasket do I replace? And is this even a job for a fairly handy amateur?
Thanks

what cylinders had water in them?
a hole in the exaust riser
cracked intake manifold
cracked/corroded block
cracked/corroded head
head gasket blown across all cylinders
improper winterizing
Need to know more info, was it ever running?, temp?,oil press?,overheated?,
parts replaced to date?

Re: Hydrostatic Lock -Which gasket leaking ?

Boat was run everyday for a week while camping with alot of kids tubing behind her 2 weeks ago and she seemed to run hotter than I remember from last year and ran on a couple of times after shutdown. Hook it up to the muffs a week ago to warm her up for a trailer to the water evening cruise and she won't turn over.Order the starter and discover that every cylinder has water.Take off muffs and turn over engine with no plugs and rusty looking water works its way out and eventually stops after 5mins of cranking. Aft cylinder definately takes by far the longest to stop spurting. Seems like the pressurized water from the muffs has found a way to get to every cylinder ?

Engine compression checked last fall by savvy buddy with tester and if I remember correctly all cylinders between 148-152 (Psi?) doesn't burn oil .

Only owned boat for 2 yrs -unknown if any major engine parts ever replaced- I've done only a transom seal kit last year , rebuilt carb in spring and the water pump 4 weeks ago.

Bt Doctur already gave you the answer, you just have to figure out which one is YOUR problem.
IF you put a new long block in the boat, and used the old intake and exhaust manifold and riser, then that is what is not trying to kill your new engine.

Man you guys are fast on the replies - kudos bigtime.

So it sounds like Ive got nothing to lose by diving in and yanking her apart and hope its just gaskets. A cracked anything didn't even cross my radar.

Thanks

I'll post tomorrow after I get dirty

He says it ran on a couple of times after shut down............if it did this the last time he shut off this might have been when the water was ingested.

I don't think the water would have been rusty that quick from the muffs.........

That's what I got anyway.......
