Hynautic Steering Cylinder- How to Remove End Caps?

I have a Hynautic K6 Steering Cylinder. I am attempting to replace the seals by removing the end caps/gland with a spanner wrench. The wrench is turning the end caps but they aren't loosening up. I read on another post about an access hole that you run a tool through to grab a keeper that holds a band/ring. I believe I have located these access holes and I think this tool came with the seal kit. I have tried to push the tool in the hole after rotating the cylinder but haven't had any luck.

I would appreciate help on how to remove these . Thanks,

Thank you for the info. I called and they were able to give me basic info but unfortunately the techs are out of the office until Tuesday and I hope to tackle this over this weekend.

I was able to remove the retaining rings in the cylinder as outlined in the picture attached. I found a bicycle spanner tool that worked great and was readily available locally. According to Seastar's FAQ site regarding the pin diamater, it should fit those cylinders as well for less than $10. It is made by Park Tools and is model SPA-1 pin spanner green handled wrench. I pushed the curled end of the retaining ring through the opening grove in the middle hole in the end cap. The retaining ring is then caught in this groove. I then spun the cylinder caps using the spanner wrench. The tag end of the retaining ring then exited through the slot in the picture with a little help from a precision screw driver. I thought the end caps would come out easily now. Unfortunately, they are not. The spanner wrench is spinning the caps but they are not coming loose. I am not sure how to pull them out without probably damaging something. Would appreciate any input.

You sort of lost me, trying to follow your procedure. So, is the retaining ring now out of there? If it is, the cylinder end should pull out along with the rod. BTW, you only have to remove one end. Once the rod is out, the seal in the other end is accessable.

The procedure for removing the retaining wire is to turn the cylinder end in the direction that it turns the easiest, usually clockwise depending on who assembled it, watching the retaining wire move in the slot as you do. When the retaining wire's trailing end arrives at the slot, lift (bend) it up out of the slot. Then turn the cylinder end in the opposite direction. That will feed the retaining wire on out of the slot. As said, then the rod and end should be able to be pulled out with ease.

Use some 400 grit wet-or-dry paper to remove any scratches in the rod and clean thoroughly before reassembling, or it will leak again. Cleanliness is of utmost importance.

Thanks, I forgot to release one of the bleeder screws and had too much presure still in there. It was either that or I just may have been babying the rod. I was able to get it out. Found out I had a large pitting and ding exposing sharp raised metal in the rod that must have been causing the seal to leak. That really stinks but I was able to buy another identical unit with a good rod for about a $100.
