My johnson tn28 says to use hypoid oil in the lower unit. What is hypoil oil and can I use typical lower unit oil? If not where can I buy hypoid oil?

Re: Hypoid oil

Yes, use 90 weight outboard gearcase oil. Hypoid oil mean oil for hypoid cut gears. All modern outboards use hypoid cut gears so modern outboard gearcase oil is hypoid oil. Generally speaking, these oils are smelly.<br />Hope that explains it!

Re: Hypoid oil

Thanks, smelly they are. I have already put the standard lower unit oil in. I wanted to make sure it was ok, if not I would have changed it. Again, Thanks.
