This spring I took the bottom end off this motor. Put in reverse n could not get apart. With some tugging I ended up removing the shift lever. Then lost lever n pin. Found new locking pin n lever. After putting together I get forward, neutral but no reverse. Take back apart I push linkage down I get reverse. Pull up I get neutral n one more pull up I get forward. I assume clockwise is forward and counter clock wise is reverse. What am I doing wrong. Thanks in advance

Guess that would help. Its a 95 9.9 mercury. (MH) I also knocked the ss wire off the pull start which I think stops it from starting in gear.

Does this have a tiller shift? And did you pull the shift rod out of the lower completely?

No I never removed the shift rod. I did replace the impeller n thermostat. But when I tried to take apart I got impatient n removed the shift lever with locking pin. Yes it's tiller with gears on handle. Kill switch on side with stop button on handle. Pull start I will put photos of the shift lever n pin which I think it's called.

What do you mean removed the shift rod with locking pin? When you reassembles it did you put the tilt lock release in the right place?

The shift rod releases just under the carburetor.----Almost no tools required for that simple step.----Rotate a latch and it disconnects itself almost.

Yes after I forced the plastic shifter off the square steel bar where the locking pin rotates and locks onto I got with the ahh dumba#@ that would of been easier. As the title I am a snuck. This part I got now. Lil too late. Now I cannot get this back together with forward neutral reverse. I only can get forward n neutral. Reverse is locked. Now when take apart n push on the shifter rod I can get reverse. Neutral n forward n with nothing connected the shifter moves freely. I assume when in forward the prop should turn clockwise and resist counterclockwise. When in reverse prop turns counter clockwise n resist clockwise. I can't seem to line up the shifter rod to the plastic shifter lever. Where do I go from here.

In reverse the prop will lock both ways. In forward the prop will turn one way and not the other. What about the tilt clamp that has to be removed to drop the lower?. Is the shifting lever to high to get the pin back in?

Never touch the tilt clamp. But I will look into removing it. Yes either too high or too low. Guess I made a easy job into a nightmare

Ok on the 15 hp mercs the shift rod is open by the swivel bracket. It is easy to see the clamp I am talking about. When you shift that moves with the rod and engages and disengages the tilt mech. There is a possibility that got left on the rod and when you dropped the lower it pulled the shift rod out.
