when i say nice i mean good looking, and speaking of that where can i get digital gauges for everything else in the boat. i just put a bunch of money in here... new motor, exhaust manifolds, bellows...... hell everything and i am thinking why stop now. the reason i want an hour meter is for the new engine. now the question is which one do i want, one that hooks to a plug wire or the ign?

The one that uses the plug wire will only register the actual engine run time...which is what I suspect you are looking for. The one tied to the ignition switch ends up recording how long your switch is set to "ON" or "RUN"...and that will usually be more than your engine(s) are actually in use.

Mercury makes a nice one that uses the plug wire...can be reset...and sits in the engine bay:

Re: i am looking for a nice hour meter.....

i found this one on ebay but it's says for small engine.what the difference?

I bought one for my 10 hp outboard at my local lawn mower shop.

Looks exactly like that except has a different name on it, same exact
price. No shipping.:)

Runs off a plug wire, works great except the tach reads double the actual
rpms. That's not a concern to me though, just wanted an hour meter.

The one that you want is #79-859000A2 (all Mercruiser engines). If that is what he is selling, then his description is wrong. Look at this link for the different models:

Happy boating!

P.S. If you don't want the one on eBay, let me know...I have been looking for another one!

Not trying to create an issue, but how much do you leave your key in the "on" position without the engine running?

It happens, seen posts asking how to subtract hours here every once in a while. And they seem legit, not like some guy trying to roll back an ODO.

I could see it happening to me. I use my key to troubleshoot electrical stuff as it turns on the volt meter. I also leave my boat's batteries "on" for a couple of days sometimes on purpose. This way I can see if I have one getting soft.

If you are looking for honest engine hours...then even once torpedoes that plan.

Then again...if you are looking for a gauge to monitor your switch "ON" time, then you have it figured out!

Happy boating!

Seems obvious. Decide what you want to measure and then get the approprite gauge.
