I am needing to replace the od's on 290 SeaRay..corrosion/anode problem. Need assist

Hi guys I'm a Johnsonrude guy who has just been handed a 290 SeaRay with Merc outdrives with severe corrosion damage.
The hydraulics are shot meaning the line connection are deCentigraded . My first time dealing w/ such and was looking for a little help.
Merc od model number not avail but s/n on port is 0f672718 (see pics)
Looks like four bolts on each side of foot come off and lower unit just slides out.
Am I right so far?

best to remove the 6 nuts and remove as a unit. corrosion is bad but not completely bad. connections to cylinders and block
are repairable.drives may just need a good cleaning and painting.
drives are GEN II types.

Owner thinks neighbors boat is putting current in the water. How does the mrecathode system work and how to troubleshoot?

Is it normal for the U joints on an Alpha 1 GenII to be rusted? Do exhaust and water take take that path and possibly cause the rusting or should that area receive oil from upper?

I take it you removed the drives and found then to be wet,rusted, damaged. A sign water got in or was trapped in the bellows. that is a dry area ,nothing should be in there.
MerCathode is not designed to neutralize ac current in the water

The only thing that ends up in there is the excess grease you pump into the gimbal bearing. You have had water intrusion for sure.

And I agree with Bt Doctur's first post, those drive look ugly, but they aren't necessarily junk. However as pointed out Sterndrive Engineering sells complete, brand new drives for under $1500 each, available right here on iboats. Good luck.

And unless you find that stray current whatever you put back there will look the same in very short order.
Years ago we had a slip holder that USED(past tense) a car charger on an extention cord to keep a wood boat afloat
untill the main breaker was shut off.The 6 boats on either side never had another problem with their zincs.

In order to check the Merchathode system you will need a silver chloride tester and a digatal multimeter.After the boat has set undisturbed for a day Hook the black wire on the multimeter and plug the silver chloride tester into the ohms. Put the tester on ohms and put the chloride tester in the water about 6 inches from your drive/ prop. If you get a reading around 1000-1100 it is fine. Alot of things have to be taken into consideration with this test because of current and the makeup of the water such as pirite & soforth. If you are getting low readings like in the 700-800 range you can improve it by adding a extra controller to the current one. Just make sure it is the same color as the one on there. It's either red or blue.Just wire one to the other.What the mercathode does is polorizes the water around the drive to help protect it. Fast running water effects the protection
