Last week after a nice day on lack Jackson in Florala Alabama I got the pontoon on the trailer and pulled her up the ramp, got out and realized I had left the Yamaha outboard running. The motor ran for about 20 to 30 seconds out of water, and water was still draining out heavily from the lower unit when my son shut her down after I freaked out and yelled at him to shut it down. I then backed the boat back in the 65 degree water and started it back, still had a solid stream of water from the tale tale, should I go ahead and replace the impeller ?

Its probably fine. Good pee stream sounds good. Must be a very quiet motor.

I've done that with a small outboard. . . It seemed to be fine even years afterwards. With a situation like that, there will be some residual water remaining in the pump to provide enough lubrication to ghe impeller for a short period of time. If left running for longer, friction would take over and wear out the impeller.

it is a judgement call, so maybe just keep an eye on it.

I will try taking the boat back out this weekend, as always I will run it on the muffs first, this time watching the pea stream for signs of trouble.

The motor is pretty quiet , with the truck running I just didn't hear it, still a dumb mistake.

It will probably be fine since it was still pumping water. You may want to change the impeller if it is anywhere near the two year mark, but I would probably just keep an eye on it for the next few runs. I doubt you did any real damage.
