i have a few questions:

1: can i do it with the outdrive mounted on the transome
2: what are some things i should look out for , tips, tricks that the manual does not tell you.

You CAN do it still hanging on the transom, but now would be a good time to also look at the gimbla bearing, u-joints, engine alignment etc. Any particular reason you DON'T want to pull the drive?

The OEM manual tell you all you need to know to do the job... It was written by the people who designed the drive, and I would think they know the best way to do the job... I have done it a few times before and I follow the procedure laid out in the manual. Once someone starts to deviate from the procedure, they are leaving themselves open to missing something, or screwing something up....

Just my humble opinion....

If you do come up with a better way, please let us know....

One tip... The book says use alignment pins for the housing... use them!!

did you check your engine alignment.

one trick i like to do when i install a new impeller is i like to use liquid dish soap on the impeller before i slide the impeller housing on over the impeller.

check your wear plate the one the impeller sits on and make sure its not bent and use new gaskets. and take it apart in forward gear so when you go to slide the lower onto the upper just turn your prop shaft ccw and that will make it easier to line up the drive shaft splines also grease the drive shaft splines

I did my friends today with the drive on. much easier IMHO unless you have a drive stand. i sat the lower in a milk crate. remember to shift to forward before removal. watch that little o-ring when your going back together and dont forget about the bolt going upwards under the trim tab zinc before ya start wacking on the lower. oh and go for the complete mercruiser/quicksilver pump kit. it comes with a cool newly designed one piece rubberized gasket plate (no more gasket-plate-gasket or alignment pins) and you get a new seal carrier and seals for under the pump. a few bucks more but worth it for the first line of defense against over heating that new motor

if you do replace the seals in the seal carrier under the water pump put some electrical tape on the drive shaft splines so the splines don't cut the seal lips

Is your friends a Gen II or a Gen I?

Doing a Gen II you MUST use the alignment pins... You WILL have problems later if you don't.... These can be worn pump housing, worn drive shaft, overheating.... But, it's your choice....

its a gen 2. like i said. there is a new plate coated in rubber that takes the place of the old plate and 2 gasket setup. therefore, there is nothing to "align" and no pins are needed. last years kit i did on mine and the other two i did for friends had the 2 gasket/plate setup and needed the pins. this is the fourth one i did and always used a complete mercruiser OEM repair kit with housing and all. ya know, the $150 one. they always came in a white box. this one came in a clear plastic blister display pack. immediately i said "yo dude i thought i said get a genuine merc pump!" assuming at first glance it was aftermarket. sure enough like i said its a newly designed MERCURY/QUIKSILVER kit with the plate covered in rubber and NO gaskets. and it was a breeze to install. found a part # 817275Q05 and picture on ebay.

also this diagram. look at part #18

The last Gen II I did was only about 3 weeks ago, and it was the old 2 gasket setup... That kit must be REALLY new.... Thanks for the info...

Re: i am thinking of doing the water pump in the outdrive

thanks for this info. as a begginer working on my boat I was told to take it all apart (which for me is not easy or natural) because I ran it with no water for 30 seconds or so last year. The water was pumping great, but I did it. It had no seal on the water pump cover and I have received no post help. I kept researching old posts and found yours. I think I will just put it back together now. The impeller looked perfect and tight and I just kept it in the housing that still has its seal in place. the book has slowed me down again. so all I do is put the gasket on slide the housing over the shaft and put the four bolts in. It seemed a little to easy. Thanks again
