My wife and I bought a boat today. It's a 1972 sixteen foot Deck Boat with a 55 HP Yamaha. We left just as it started snowing. I hadn't even checked the weather so didn't realize that there was a snowfall coming. Anyway here is the boat:

I had a post earlier asking about how to tell if there is wet foam under the deck. I don't have to worry about that now. The seller told me that when he was replacing the deck he removed about 600 pounds of wet Styrofoam. No idea why it was there. I didn't say anything.

Anyway, I was glad to get the boat home as I wasn't positive how the trailer would handle the 85 mile trip. But no problems. Except that parking in my back yard didn't work as I had hoped. I have to back in a city alley while dodging electric poles and due to the neighbors garages I can't quite make the 90 degree turn into my yard. So we got the boat in, unhooked it and pushed it the last few feet. I'd rather it was up against the house instead of by the alley, but I'll work on that some more when the snow melts.

Tomorrow I'm off to buy a bigger tarp to cover it with. I also need a spare tire, trolling motor, deep cycle battery, battery charger and a trailer lock.

I work next weekend, so it'll be two weeks before I can take it out. But we are all excited.

 Sorry if the pics are too large. But I just created a photobucket account for iboats. And I swear that the pics on photobucket have been resized to 640 x 480. Yet every preview I do here they are 1024 X 768. It's like there is a first attempt copy that is not being overwritten by the changes I made. Anyway, I wanted to get this post out and brag.

Making a 90 degree trailer turn is tuff. Plan on doing it by hand and you will save a lot of frustration. You might even look into a dolly to push it in with. Looks lite enough to be able to do that with a trailer dolly. Single axle should make that pretty easy.

Nice boat, looks like the guy did a good job with the rebuild.

I know what you are talking about with the backing, I park 3 wide in my drive and I have to hit the middle between my wife and daughters cars, at night, it can be a little nerve wracking.

It snowed in St Louis, I am clear up in northen Indiana and we haven't seen the nasty white for a couple weeks now, I am very much done with snow and ready to see some green on the trees.

I sure would be curious to know what he replaced the foam with, and his method for replacing it... if he even replaced it since he didn't even know why it was there.

Congrats on your purchase, looks like someone's going to get a good tan this summer!:)

Cool boat. Congrats! Looks like a nice fishing platform and nice place to hang out. Your pictures are fine. I think sometimes they get cached at the old size on your computer but are fine for everyone else viewing them.

Re: I bought a boat today

The seller was asking $2000, we paid $1800. The boat is a 1972, the o/b is a 1991 55 HP that is very clean. I spent a few hours today cleaning up the boat. It came with about 10 life vest, an oar, some type of pole or gaff, fire extinguishers, bumpers, whistles and a throw cushion. Also some type of tubing inflatable on a rope. I haven't looked at it yet but it might be a two person inflatable. As we were leaving he called out that he almost forgot it. Okay, I'll take it. There is also a table that he never remounted.

I don't like the look of the tires, and there is no spare so I think I'll buy two new wheels and keep the old ones as spares. Or at least one complete wheel and one tire. I also want to get a trolling motor and put a fish finder on the want list. But first I have to get it registered, license plates, pay state tax, etc. I'm off Thursday so I'll work on that then. --- Anyway, I'm happy.

We are also discussing a name for the boat. I've suggested For Play, which was vetoed by the wife. Also Helen Waite. Then whenever anyone is looking for me the wife and kids can tell them to just go to Helen Waite. :D (Read that out loud if necessary.)

I don't think he put anything back in as he didn't seem to know why it was there in the first place. That's another thing for my list. But there does not seem to be much space between the decking and the hull at the back end of the boat. So it will be very easy to keep on eye out for water intrusion. There is a new sump pump, but it's not hooked up or even mounted. (Another thing for the list.)

I don't know. That bimini top goes most of the way forward. I might just be sitting back in the shade and enjoying the good life. :D

By the way. I mean that about "the list." We have an eight foot dry erase board that we use as a calendar/notepad. It has a new section for "Boat." Now, an eight foot dry erase board cost around $100. Instead you can go to the lumberyard and get a sheet of hardboard with a white surface (I forget the name) for about $12.

Nice boat and you got a good deal. I would be very concernd about what the po did to your boat. Hopefully the foam was not for structure integrety and if it is for floation purpose, she might not float, either way bro, you need to tear into that deck and check it out before you get your family on it.

If the foam was wet, water is getting in somehow, might need to check that transom. Not trying to be the bearer of bad news but someone should tell ya.
I still think you got a good deal.

Nice boat - Congrats. Sounds like you have a handle on the work involved to give it a good look over before getting it on the water. There have been several posts on re-foaming the boat in the restoration threads. I've seen everything from pool noodles to blue/pink board insulation, to pop bottles and ping pong balls (not reccomending these, just that I've seen them used). Good luck with the project and have fun on the water.

Congrats, nice looking find. The first photo will make for a nice Christmas card this year! Good luck.
