Ok. For starters, i do understand that this is not the correct forum for my question but I'm beggining to think it might be . I posted my thread in the other outboards forum and many people viewed it but there were no responses. If anyone has a clue or if anyone can find any information on how to drop the lower unit on my old 9hp volvo penta, it is greatly appreciated. If only it was as simple as an Evinrude/Johnson(remove bolts, disconnect shift linkage and pull lower unit off), but there is no shift linkage on a volvo. If I don't find the information, my next thing to do is cut the shift rod and tap and die it to create my own shift linkage( The shift rod is whats keeping the volvo's lower unit from pulling apart.) thanks again

It must disconnect somewhere w/o cutting the shift rod. Are there water intake vents that can be removed below the anti-ventilation plate on the gearcase? Linkage disconnect may be hidden behind 'em. Or under carb.

Can you find a manual for your particular outboard?

Good luck!

Thanks Gentlemen. I will look through the site that you posted and see if i can find what i am looking for. I was told that you have to take out the Shifter( The forward,neutral, reverse shifter). The shifter goes through the leg of the motor and looks as if the shift rod connects to it internally just below the block. There was a washer and a cotter pin on the end of the shifter. I took this out and tried to pull the shifter out and it will not slide out. I even tapped it with a hammer. So we are not confused with my definitions, the shifter is what you use to engage the the motor into forward, neutral and reverse with your hand and the shift rod is the rod that travels down the leg(drive shaft housing) of the motor and connects to the lower unit to engage forward, neutral and reverse. If i figure this thing out I will post a picture and explain how its done so we all gain the knowledge. In the meantime if anyone finds anything on how to do this it is much appreciated.

FYI, found some history on Volvo Penta outboards if you haven't seen it;
volvo penta outboard motor parts

One possible maker for the VP outboard powerhead of that era is Honda. Wonder if the leg, and lower are the same as a Honda?

I'm not sure this will help but I have an old johnson and the shift linkage is actually under the power head. I had to take it off to get to the linkage to change my impeller. Im sure that it could possibly be the same for your motor

Yeah, I was going to suggest the same thing. I have a mid-50's Envirude and you have to remove the powerhead to disconnect the shift linkage - it sits inside the D/S casing below the powerhead.

Ok I had a dumb attack. For starters i was mislead by the local marine shop telling me that i had to remove the shifter from the leg to pull the shift rod and the lower unit down and off. It was simple. There are four bolts two remove the lower unit and you also have four bolts at the bottom of the lower unit that you can take off to get to the lower unit gears. When you remove these, you can disconnect the shift rod from the gears and pull the lower unit down, leaving the hole shift rod attached to the shifter. Thanks again
