I Can?t Believe How Much We Are Enjoying the Boat

I was not planning on buying a boat. We had had one when our kids were smaller like teen and pre-teen years and enjoyed it while living in Northern Virginia. Well I was looking to buy a sports car, something like a Honda S2000. My wife said ?why don?t you get a boat instead?. I hadn?t really even thought of getting one, but you know started looking around to see what was available and how much I would have to spend to get something I liked. I had done just enough boating to know I didn?t want something drastically under powered like my Welcraft 196 with the Merc 470 was.

I was really looking at smaller boats with the 3.0L 4-cylinder, because that is what I could tow with my 98 Volvo V70 which had a factory tow rating of around 3300 lbs. I was trying to stay under 2500 lbs. The problem was I saw this Crownline 180BR with the 4.3L V6, but knew it was too much for me to tow. So then I start looking at bigger vehicles to tow with, and realize I can not buy any of the vehicles I am looking at and the boat. I would have been pushing $25 to 30K which was WAY out of my ballpark.

Then I decide I will sell the Volvo and buy a replacement vehicle for whatever I can get out of the Volvo. So I found a 98 GMC Envoy with a salvage title for $3500 and it has a towing rating of 5,000 lbs. So I call the guy up with the Crownline to see if it?s still available. It had been two weeks or more since I talked to him. I kept looking at all these other boats and almost bought one that I didn?t like near as much, but could be towed with my Volvo.

The guy with the Crownline was on vacation and would not be back until the weekend and he was taking another guy who has looked at it out when he gets back. Well somehow I convinced him that I had looked at it first and should have first dibs and that I wanted to buy it contingent on a test run on the water. I offered him $2k less than he was asking and he agreed to the price and that we would go out on it Saturday with the understanding it was mine unless I found something wrong with it which would negate the deal.

In the meantime I go look at the Envoy and buy it right on the spot using a PayPal account on the sellers computer right in his living room. My son in law and I drive it home that night. The boat is great and I buy it too and then sell the Volvo for $3600.

All because my wife said ?why don?t you by a boat instead of a sports car?. Maybe that?s why I have kept her around for 33 years.

We have enjoyed the heck out of the boat. My kids and grandkids love going out on the boat with Gigi and Papa Jim. And Papa Jim loves going out on it all by himself too. The really good part is that I can be in the water in less than a half hour from leaving my house. The place we go regularly is not a great place, but the water is clean and it?s close. Just wish it was a little bigger.

You've got it bad now. I just wish we lived closer to a larger body of water.

Great story. And since I'm never ashamed to brag, I can be in the water in ten minutes and from there I can get anywhere in the world.

Hey, great wife you got there. Better keep her. And buy her flowers or something.

Take care of that boat and she will treat you well for a long time.

Great story. We bought a boat a few days before Memorial Day and kind of having the same experience. I have 4 kids aged 14-23 and I used to hardly see them. Now they are texting me every day to see if we are going out on the boat today... and every weekend they are home wanting to go out. We are fishing, tubing, skiing, and wakeboarding. My son has learned to slalom ski too. Its really been a blast having the boat.

There is a small lake near my house that is perfect for water sports, and I can be in the water in 15 minutes from the time the notion strikes to go out, including the time it takes to hook the trailer to my grand cherokee and drive to the launch.

We are loving it.

Great story. Nothing better than a nice boat to me. We were looking at having our deck replaced and I suggested a boat instead and my wife went for it. A deck and a boat aren't that far off in price amazingly. Of course we are 30 seconds from the lake which helped the discussions.

Re: I Can?t Believe How Much We Are Enjoying the Boat

Great story and I can kinda relate. Last July we were with friends at their house in Lake Arrowhead. They had an old bowrider at their dock and they used it to go back and forth to dinner and to go out and swim. My friend let me drive it. As I was at the helm, I noticed my wife of 37 years (we married at 19!) glancing at me with a smile. Nothing was said. Driving home from a nice weekend, I told her I had forgotten how much fun a boat was (we had one in the early 90's when our sons were young) and she said that could she see the enjoyment on my face as I was driving the friend's boat and knew we would soon be getting a boat! For the next few weeks I was a man on a mission - researching, shopping, reading and re-took a boat safety class. 3 weeks after that weekend on the lake with friends, we took delivery of a new left over 2008 in August 2009. It will be a year with the new boat in a bit over a week and we have put 111 hours on it. So MUCH fun. We both go out on Saturdays, sometimes with our sons, their wives and the grandkids and then I launch it myself on Sundays.

There really isn't anything I've found more enjoyable than boating.

Well, one thing, but that only lasts 15 or 30 minutes at most. ;)

Our family and friends get to enjoy the boat with us.

Re: I Can?t Believe How Much We Are Enjoying the Boat

great story. We recently purchased a boat as well. We were getting ready for a vacation at broken bow in OK and were thinking of renting a boat. Cost was going to be about $400 and wifey said, I don't want to spend $400 to rent a boat, lets just buy one! Thats all I needed to hear. I had a boat within 10 days!

Its been great. we've been out on it every weekend, great family time!

Glad to hear everybody is having so much fun this summer...I'm with ya 100%

Not much out there that competes with boating/fishing/watersports as a family activity that everyone enjoys:D

Now get back out there on the water;)

Re: I Can?t Believe How Much We Are Enjoying the Boat

Well I just got done spending 2.5 hours mowing the grass. Now I have to put shocks, struts, brakes, water pump and timing belt on one of my cars. I have to do at least one of those things before I go out on the boat again or else I won't do any of it. Have to do the rear shocks though since the mount went bad and it's making a real clunking sound. I hate when things take time away from being out on the boat. My dagone job is getting in the way of my personal life.
