I wanted to purchase a couple of the "caps" for the fishing seat post holes for my boat. I guess that I have lost a couple of them.

Springfield mfg., (that makes the seat posts), sent me this link. The shipping to me, was cost prohibitive. (At least I can't justify it).. Does anyone have any ideas where to get these parts ?? IF I have to, I will buy a bath tub stopper first !!!!!!!!!!!!

They are called "Spring-Lock Base Socket Plug Covers".

Check with Ranger Boats parts dept. They used to sell them for 1.60 each. Can't imagine shipping would be near that much. 800-724-7273

I bought a couple of these from my local dealer. They cost me about $5.00 each. I should have just thrown the money in the air. As that is what happened with the caps on the first wave I hit. They didn't even last a day on my boat.

What do you think is involved in shipping?

Someone has to pull the product from stock, wrap/package it, make and attach a label, and probably some other time/labor consuming tasks.

Seems to me that the price of the product is irrelevant, that it would be the same for a $2 item or a $200. item of the same size.

At the end of the day I wouldn't order it either because, like you, I don't want to pay $18-$20 for a plug, but I can't fault the vendor for his shipping cost.

Try this link and see if any of the suppliers have a storefront near you. They should be prepared to order the parts on their next PO to Springfield Marine and you would avoid the shipping cost.
Alternatively, measure the ID and OD of the post and go to any reasonably full-line hardware store and check there stock of tubing plugs and caps.
There all sorts of these that would do the job.

www.cascadedepot.com/servlet/the-190/Service-Part/Detail

Qty SKU Description Price Total
Remove 2100091 Spring-Lock Base Socket Plug Cover $2.15 for one.

Sub-Total
$2.15 one Socket Plug
Shipping: UPS Ground: $10.82
Cascade Depot ESTIMATED TOTAL $12.97

This is for them to ship just one to me in Virginia.

$ 10.82 for packaging ( box, tape, packing, etc )

Also labor for time paid to someone to package the product and ship it.
There time is also worth something just like everyone else.

Think how much he makes an hour and divide it up

Plus postage to have it mailed, that is not free either.

If the product cost $100.00 dollars, and was the same size the cost to ship would be the same.

How much do believe would be a fair price to ship it to you house ?

It's pretty tough these day's to find someone that will spend an hour working to sell a $2 part. Did you get the exact shipping cost or are you going by the max cost they posted? Thing is if you get a couple of them they'll probably combine the shipping. Don't forget to get a couple spares for that next wave and your price per unit drops.

I understand the cost of labor, and I'm NOT expecting a freebie, just that it kinda got me when I added up the total cost.

I ordered 2 pieces from SEARS a couple weeks ago, and the shipping cost was almost the same $$. And SEARS was the ONLY place to get them.

Re: I can't condone the price of shipping this part, ...................

keep in mind places that offer free shipping are just spreading out shipping costs by adding a few pennies to ALL items sold. Or if you complain about shipping costs they are just going to "take off the shipping charges" but from now on add $5 in to the price of your parts.

here is how it works.

customer orders said item. Someone needs to process the order and generate a job ticket. shall we assume this takes 10 minutes?

10 minutes so far.

next person gets job ticket for order and chases down parts.

Another 10 minutes?

20 minutes so far.

shipping department gets parts and has to package them for shipping.

yet another 10 minutes plus materials??

30 minutes plus materials so far.

stick proper shipping label on it and put it on the big brown truck. Minumum shipping charge will be $5 or so.

Lets say all parties involved in the process make $10 hr. thats $5 labor, $5 materials and $5 shipping charges.

thats $15 just to break even.

I dont know how many times I have just added on a thing or two since It was going to be the same shipping fee.

Don't forget if they ship by mail the Item has to be taken to the P.O. as they don't pick up.
