Guys
I have a Bayliner 2250 Capri with a 4 barrel 350 chev, I was doing an oil change tonight and got to the point of removing the oil filer, well thats when I hit a brick wall, it wont budge any tips on what to do next apart from remving the engine. Has anyone else had this problem?

If a oil filter ratchet won't work hammer a large screwdriver through it.
When you put the new one on put a bit of oil on the rubber ring and just hand tight it on.

That sounds bad, maybe hammer and chisel it off with fine penetrating oil. I would say its too dangerous to heat it up .

Can just hear the conversation....

St. Peter, "And how did you get here?"
Sean, "I was removing an oil filter, with a gas axe."
St. Peter, "You go to he!!!"

Damn, Bill Cosby's done that one already!

Sounds like the hammer and chisel warming up in the wings....

Assuming you warmed the engine and already have tried a filter wrench, try a strap wrench.
If that fails, drive a big screwdriver all the way thru the filter body near the base and twist. Yeah it's messy, but it works.

Im turning it anti clockwise

Ayuh,... The filter is screwed on from below,...
If you're turning it counter-clockwise, as viewed from above,...
You're turning it the wrong way...
Not saying you are, just pointing out a Very common mistake...

From above we are turning it clock wise, looking from below its anti clockwise.

Ayuh,... The your options are Beat it off, or crush the body,+ then Beat the flange off the motor, or Pull the motor for better access...

You need to grip the filter with the wrench, right up near the top of the filter as close to the block as possible. This is where the filter is the strongest, so the wrench does not collapse it any further.

If that does not work, I'm not sure what else to suggest other than a hammer and chisel as someone else stated, to try to turn it slighly to free it up.

I had a vehicle that did the same thing to me once. Not sure why some people think oil filters need to be that tight when putting them on...

oil filters,as well as spin on fuel filters, can and will tighten themselves.
occasionally I have had to rip the can off,use a modified chisel on my air chisel and remove the metal flange part by catching one of the filter in holes at a 90 degree angle and removing it that way.
no fun but doable.

Years ago I made a tool specifically for instances like this. When you or someone else has totally destroyed the can by sticking a screwdriver through it, go ahead and rip the can off. You will now see the top of the filter has a bunch of holes in it. I took a piece of scrap steel, drilled two holes in it that had the same spacing as two holes opposite each other in the top of the filter. Select a bolt that will fit into the holes in the filter. Insert two bolts into the scrap piece of steel and secure them with nuts. The bolts should be just long enough to enter the stuck filter housing. Weld a nut onto the steel piece and wrench off the filter housing. The best filter wrench is a cup wrench and the easiest way to get into oil filter trouble is the strap wrench used improperly. As was mentioned, strap wrenches need to be positioned at the top of the filter or you risk collapsing the the can.

Man, I hate when that happens. Silvertip sounds like he has the solution if you have access to steel and drills. If not, take a sharp chisel and tap the edge of the filter where it meets the filter mount. Be carful not to damage the mount.

Ahhh, kinda like a pin wrench, similar to what comes with an angle grinder- Very good tip for the OP.http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/21BwzfHDmeL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

Guys
I finally got it off, I removed the outer casing till only the base plate was left, I then purchased a small blow torch that runs on butane gas, I heated it up 3 times and let it cooled natuarally. I then used a tool that you use on removeing sanding disc's on a grinder and it basically fell off. what a relief.:D

They key was to totally destroy the rubber seal and it worked

thanks for all your ideas they did help :p

Now just make sure that when you replace the filter...clean the mounting pad....oil the rubber gasket...and tighten till the gasket touches the pad and then 3/4 of a turn more...basically just hand tight...doing it that way...I have never had one be hard to take off...

Well, do it that way if you're a GIRL..... What you want to do is screw it on as far as you can by hand, then put a strap wrench on it with a 4 foot cheater bar.... Then keep turning until you just start to see the rubber gasket extrude out between the filter and the mounting.... THEN, it's tight.... :D:D:D

Ok, seriously.... What Lou said is right.... Just touching, then 3/4 turn... Run the engine and check for leaks... If you have a leak (unlikely) then 1/4 turn more....
