And 30 to 35% of those will be from the people that just bought the boats with the cracks.

Just another reason to look forward to spring !!!!
It will come around the same time as "My motor won't start" season, "the gas is 8 months old with no stabilizer in it. What should I do ??"

I hear ya TD. You could send any extra work up to me...:p
My boat business is down to nothing.

I'm actually considering taking a job driving a tow truck for the winter.
Hourly pay that is not that great but it will get me by.
Its for triple A. I was called by the home office yesterday for a phone interview and they said they would call me back to go meet the regional manager..
The guy pretty much offered it to me from the start so i'll see where that goes.
The only other jobs around here are stuff like flipping burgers....not for me..

Re: I can't wait until cracked manifold season!

I am waiting for this...:

"I am trying to winterize my new boat and can't find the Winter/Summer button."

Winterizing threads always remind me of the one where the person was complaining of a cracked block and worse in the Spring and trying to blame it on improper winterization by the dealer that had performed the work. I wish I had captured this and saved it, because it turned out later in the thread that the owner decided to take it out in Late December or January for a New Year's Eve cruise or something. They did not think they had to winterize it again since the dealer had already winterized it earlier! Some people's kids, I swear :D

If they would just get a service manual when they buy the boat and figure out how to drain things BEFORE it got cold....

I think new boat owners should practice that at least a couple times during the summer so they know where the drains are and they don't go into panic mode the first night of below freezing temps........just saying...;)

Well make fun of the newbies all you want. I took my boat to a dealer for repairs and they forgot to drain the block. Not sure if they drained the manifold because it wasn't cracked. The Block sure was! They repaired it but still it shouldn't have happened. No, I didn't put it in the water until after the last freeze. I even call them before the first freeze to make sure they would drain it.
Sh** happens to all sooner or later. No matter how brilliant you think your are :D

Ok, as a new boat owner who hasn't even gotten their boat, and won't until Spring, and then will have to winterize it next fall, I think I might just take you up on that advice!

As to the entire thread, I can see where you folks find the funny, but I can also see where folks get confused.

I bought this damnable boat, did all my research, got excited, talked the wife into it, and then struck a deal that has the dealer storing the boat for me. I don't even get to stare at it in my driveway until the Spring.

So, to abate my need to 'enjoy my purchase', I've been coming here and reading for, oh, 2 or 3 hours a day. ;)

Anyway, there are so many threads on winterization, and so many different ideas on the best way to do it, that it's a little confusing.

All I know right now is that my 4.3L has 2 drains on the motor and 2 drains on the manifolds, and that they need to be drained....and poked with a clothes hanger or something.

I also know that some people prefer to put antifreeze in their engine, and some like to make sure that they're dry and call it quits.

I know that adding antifreeze from a set of muffs and a bucket is a very controversial subject.

I know that winterization is a good time to change your oil and the fluid in your lower end, and that every few years a new impeller is a good idea.

That's all I know, though...I don't even know how to get a service manual for my engine yet, as its an 08 and the AO section only goes to 06.

I also know that I know enough to know that I don't really know squat. :)

Hey,But you are doing the right thing...reading and learning!
So over the next boating season you have plenty of time to locate the drains and learn the engine and where stuff is and how it works!
Great deal!
That was the point of the thread....

So many people get a boat.Don't care to learn and just run it until it dies or until winter comes then they freak out about winterizing.
Never service anything then ask why is it broke?

This thread may tick some folks off but it got them reading and learning...
Many do not realize boating is a very expensive hobby unless you learn to do the service on your own.

Then they complain about why an oil change costs so much...Its only 25 bucks for their car so why is the boat any different...

Re: I can't wait until cracked manifold season!

i'm a southern boy, born & raised, probably heard the word winterizing twice, before iboat. you just took the motor off set it in the shed, and turned the boat over. but that was summerizing also.

us older timers, did not know about manuals, had no internet. we have made some big mistakes. there was not a parts store on every corner.

You can getone from the dealer where you bought the boat. Go and get it early, then you will have a little time to enjoy the reading in it. I read mine sometimes just because.

As for the second part, Brother you said a Mouth Full... If everyone knew just that much (including myself sometimes) the world would be a better place...
