I retired several years ago and in my life I have had some dangerous jobs working around machines. Often when asked about what I did I will hold up my fingers and proudly say "I have all of them it is not because of luck but more so because of skill and caution"....well tonight I cut the dog crap out of my hand just trying to sharpen a little bait knife.....go figure .This proves getting older doesn't always mean you get smarter

But you still have all your fingers, don't you? Just some scars after the healing, hopefully. In my case retiring and getting older just means I'm getting older. I'm just as smart (a matter of opinion) but I get frustrated with the the things I can't do as easily as I used to.

I don't know if "smart" has anything to do with I think we get complacent. I was trying to split a 6" length of black poly pipe with one of them double cut Japanese wood saws, with the piece of pipe in the palm of my left hand DUH, I said to my BIL this could hurt and proceeded to slip off the pipe and caught the end of my third finger with the blade. Bone is quite bright white!!!

Call me sick, but we need pictures of said injury. It is my opinion that a dull knife is much more dangerous than a sharp one. When I clean my walleye, I have 3 filet knives and use a new "just sharpened" knife on each fish. And yes I have cut myself too.

Re: I cut my finger

i was using my chainsaw in a tree.
while hanging i absentmindedly rested the saw on my leg, my hand was off the trigger, but the blade was just winding down.
luckily i was wearing my chainsaw pants and it didnt even nick them.
woke me up and scared the crap outta me though

Just because you are retired doesn't mean you no longer need your fingers....

Hopefully you still have most of them LOL.....

A dull knife is much more dangerous than a sharp one simply because you need to exert more force to cut whatever your cutting. Also, if you've just sharpened it, it's probably more on your mind that it's sharp!

Glad you still have all your fingers.

I got my thumbs, indexes and middle fingers into a set of slip rolls about 30 years ago. They still hurt and nails haven't grown right since.

Fingers are important units.

The complacent theory works.

We tend to forget how easily metal can eat its way thru skin. If too many years go by without injury that's when we need to start paying more attention to what we are doing. At least I know that I have had small 'reminder' cuts, you know, the ones it takes to remind us that we almost made a serious error. Most my 'reminders' can be covered with a normal 'wimp sticker' not needing stitches. But straightening a bend lawn-mower blade like a nail on the concrete floor, well, that on was just glued, still didn't need any stitches, but it was my first trip to the ER in a very long time.

Re: I cut my finger

I wear Harbinger weight lifting gloves as work gloves often. They have wrist wraps and the palms have three layers of leather for padding.
I have never cut myself with a power tool.
When I was about 5 years old my neighbor cut off his toes with the lawnmower and I have been appropriately respectful ever since.
but the other day I was ripping a piece of plywood with a circular saw.
I reached under to brace the sagging strip of wood so the blade wouldn't bind or jump and whack!
It felt like I got stung by a hornet and hit with a hammer.
After about 10 seconds I realized that blade caught the padding of the glove and whipped my hand against the board, but I wasn't cut. The blade cut through the 3thick layers of leather on my glove.
I hope that scares more caution into me for another 40 years

Re: I cut my finger

G'Son other G'Pa got a helo ride a few weeks ago.

Cut some trim on the chop saw, slid the pieces to the right so he could trim the left end, but still kept his right hand on the saw, passed his left hand around behind the blade then to the right to hold the pieces, brought the saw down, cuting into his left arm just down from the elbow.

Almost to the bone, very nasty, lucky he didn't take it off completely.

Why didn't he simply switch hands?

Not ambidextrous like most of us mech's.

I didn't put the guard back on the band saw, the off switch just happened to be right next to the blade.

Re: I cut my finger

Everybody slips up sometimes.

A few months ago I pulled a stupid. Tried to cut a 2" pvc pipe with a saws'all(wrong blade too). The blade grabbed and when it started shaking my thumb slipped INSIDE the guard not under it. The blade holder(saddle?) whacked my thumb probably 20 times before it wound down and i could get it out, and I had scratches on my nail from the blade. That scared the crap out of me, and I lost the nail the next day.

Before hand I told my little brother you should never do it like this, but I'm in a hurry

Sounds like a "hold my beer and watch this" moment. Bet your little bro believes you now.

Re: I cut my finger

Finger cuts hurt but I hear toes are even worse. I cut my middle finger completely off 30 years ago, playing with a neighbor boy in his dads garage. It hurt pretty bad but as luck would have it there happened to be a vascular surgeon at the rural hospital who was there for someone else that otherwise wouldn't have ever been there. He sewed it back on, nerves and all and nobody can tell it ever happened and it was completely mangled when it happened. I slept with my hand tied on a wall above my head for months for the circulation to allow it to heal. Only if I whack it hard when it is well below zero am I reminded.

Re: I cut my finger

My dad lost the tip of his pinky finger, in a mini-bike accident. They sewed it back on... at a 90 degree angle. I'd tell him "what do you need the square for use you pinky!":laugh:
