i.d. part found in 470 outdrive

found this little key when I took off my Alpha 1 outdrive. Where does it go when I put stuff back together?

It looks a lot like the stainless shaft that centers and holds your exhaust shutters in place. You should check the exhaust passage for the rest of the pieces as they may be restricting exhaust flow.

Dozer is right on! Here it is for your engine: #7 http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...62&bnbr=17&bdesc=EXHAUST+ELBOW+ASSEMBLY+(MCM) I believe there are two versions, one for your vintage and another for boats newer than 1982.

Thanks for the quick reply. You are exactly right. The larger "T" brackets that held the shutter ended up in my propellor housing with a terrible noise. I've been trying to find out what they are, and now I know. As soon as I can get a good part number for the "T" bracket, I'll be working on the replacement. Based on other searches after your help, it looks like by shutter will be 45586. My system is like this feller's:

Ironically, after the horrible noise (totally killed the engine), and followup grinding sounds when I re-started, I made a quick purchase of a rebuilt outdrive, and was in the process of installing it when I found the additional parts. Now I'll have to decide whether to put the old drive back on, or use the rebuilt. Apparently the only problem was the shutter assembly. I'm learning the hard way.

Thanks for the all the help. Got the correct new parts in spite of the picture in the diagram. This is what I call aggravating: When I took off the exhaust boot, I found 2 non-original exhaust flapper brackets, and the metal cross piece, still in position. So, someone in the past knew that the exhaust flapper was missing, installed a new one, and didn't dig around enough to find the old pieces. They hung around there for awhile until a piece bounced out enough to catch my prop housing. Wow. I'm putting on the rebuilt outdrive anyway, but all of this could have been avoided by a 10 minute search a few years ago.
