I've been looking for an outboard in the 50hp - 75hp range for my little project fishing boat.

Saw this ad on craigslist this morning and emailed the dude right away. He didn't have a phone number and I didn't hear from him quickly, but that was expected since it was Mother's Day today.

For Sale - Mariner 50 HP ~ 1988, $300.00
3 cylinder; 2 stroke
Includes:
Steering and throttle cables and shift control
Engine repair manual
Engine can be test run
Buyer has to remove the engine and controls from the current boat.

He called me about 3pm and we chatted a little. The motor does have power trim and tilt, but it sounds like an add-on unit because it's located outside the engine proper. The fellow sounded like a decent sort and told me he has the motor mounted on a 13' Boston Whaler, which is seriously overpowered and he's downgrading engines to something more appropriate. He told me that he'd been out fishing with the boat and engine yesterday and that it worked well. He did say that because it's a 3 cylinder with 2 carbs that it can be "cantankerous" to get started sometimes. Hmmm...

The bottom line is that had he lives 100 miles south of me and had he called me earlier in the day that I would have driven down for a looksee. However, it was simply too late in the day today and the guy travels during the week, so he won't be back until next weekend.

I dunno... maybe I should have just driven down there this afternoon.

Whaddya think?

I think it is absolutely worth the drive to check it out. That would push that small boat of your's just perfect.

I would call him and try for an evening look during the week.

Would I be correct to say Mariner was made by Yamaha before they started putting there own name on them?

A running motor with controls and an after market TT for $300, my only question is why are you still home?

If the TT is a CMC they are north of $500 new so just that makes it worth it, ya if it checks out I think you would be nuts not to get it.

I have found things work out like they do for a reason, think it over, do some researce on the motor and then pull the trigger next weekend if ti checks out, maybe call the guy and tell him to hold it for you.

He travels during the week and is unavailable. Had I not been in the middle of a painting project, I might have gone on down there at 3:30 this afternoon. Maybe. LOL

Yep, I agree with sailor?s premonitions and superstitions? LOL. There was just something about it that wasn?t adding up. The guy told me that he was surprised by the number of calls he received from the C/L ad. The fact that the engine was still available gave me a niggling feeling? especially since he said it was ?cantankerous? to start sometimes. I just didn?t feel comfortable with committing to a 4-hour round trip just to check it out? and maybe have it sold out from under me while I was en route. Not to mention that it would have been quite late to start a disassembly project on a stranger's boat.

At any rate, I now have to wait till next weekend when he returns home. Who knows what could happen in the meantime, eh?

If he had it on the boat and used it the other day then even if its hard to start i would buy it.. you can always tune it and clean out the carbs but at least you know its a runner..
