i made a trip to the james river to go catfishing yesterday first time in my boat..and went to an area looking to net some bait...this area has a very shallow mud flats and i ended up running up on it, 1.5 ft in the mud!!...we managed get out of it but motor died and would not idle and a guy that was in the area towed us back to the dock...once at the dock i did some adjustments and was able to keep her idling...so we decided to go back out fishing d:)

right away i noticed a lack of power and knew i had blown something....only had 4200 rpms at WOT instead of 5000...about 10pm we decided to head back in ....i start motor and take off ..she would not plane unless we shifted weight to the front of boat....now max rpm's was 3000......half mile back to the dock we hit another 1.5ft mud flat!!..this time we wasnt moving..i raised motor up and somehow managed to get out of it...we limped back to the dock and went home.....

today i did a compression check on it... 130/135/140/10...was going to pull off head to check the head gasket/pistons but ended up snapping 4 head bolts so i pulled off exhaust cover to check pistons from the side.......and there she was.. a nice pretty hole in the #4 piston and both rings broke on it...

i wont be rebuilding..not worth it... but hate to buy another type of motor since i have learned to work on these to some extent...so i'll be looking on ebay for a decent force or maybe a yammy...

here's some pics for your viewing pleasure :)

rebuild yourself and could be around $500.00, or get a rebuilt powerhead for around $1200.00.

Of course you would still have one problem doing it that way.....it will still be a force.

just got done rebuilding my force 125 because I just couldn't afford to buy something else, cost me bout 500 and it was really easy, tore it down, bored it .020 over, rebuilt and just started it first time this morning. fired right up. Winter would be a good time to do it yourself and save some money. Assuming you have winter where you are.

here are some pics of my fun time:

Re: i finally blew her up

I spent just over 600 but I did spend about 150 on extra parts, I got a new overheat sensor, and a new exhaust plate, so the rebuild parts was under 500.

boring was 75 per cylinder (in wisconsin) I rebored 2 cyl and rehoned all 4. Make sure the shop does outboards and isn't just a car shop.

Pistons w/rings and wrist pins were around 90 each

80 bucks for a full gasket kit

wrist pin bearings I think were 22 per set. for the new pistons.

I guess it would depend on how bad your cylinder is damaged and would you just repair the damaged one or do them all right away. I just did 2 of my 4, but I did re-ring all 4 while I had it opened up.

go to this site and just add the parts you think you will need to the shopping cart to see what the parts will cost before you decide.

I got a lot of my parts from this site, I also got some from this site:

plus the marine doctor helped out with a lot of tech advice and tips.

I tell you, it was very easy to do, as long as you are a bit mechanical, I would at least consider it. I have pics of every bit of my motor as I took it apart, and bagged and boxed all the parts and screws seperately and labled just so it was easier to put back together.

if you have any questions, just let me know. I think the 120 you have, and my 125 have pretty much the same powerhead. in fact, looking at your picture of your exhaust side, you have the same gasket layout.

If you decide to do it, get yourself a manual and follow it step by step. I got the seloc manual for 33 from the motorbookstore;
