I Got a question

When going to a marine mechanic do they have a check list of things to look at? When I bought mine I had a mechanic check it out and he gave me a list of things that need to be done (nothing big). Change impeller, change oil, fuel filter. Normal maintenance stuff. Does anyone have one of these master lists of things to check?

Re: I Got a question

I don't know about any master list but most service items are common sense stuff like: Oil, filters, fuel lines, leaks (oil and water), condition of hoses, tune up items, condition of wires and connections (especially battery and fuses), bellows, extracting codes (or lack therof), raw pump impellor, pressure test closed systems, check items listed on service bulletins, check items listed by customer. I'm sure there is more but I've got a brain drain.

As in the auto world, most stuff is visual inspection, if anything is suspect then a closer look is warranted.

Bondo may have put a smiley face next to his post but he has made a good point, the service manual is a damn good starting point for any checkup.

Aldo

yes my list of must-does is huge.. two things.. change oil and filters..

as for the rest.. keep a carefull eye on things and if the boat runs nicely enjoy it for a bit..

i once had an entire damn engine rebuilt based on estimated usage only to find out a couple of months later that the previous owner had done exactly the same thing just before i acquired it..

trog100

Re: I Got a question

It also depends on where you do your boating.

Salt water boaters need more corrosion protection maintenance than fresh water boaters.

Everybody needs a tune-up from time to time.
Oil and filters have regular needs.
4 stroke outboards need plugs a little less often than 2 strokes...

This is where a really good mechanic can save money... knowing when and what to do.

Re: I Got a question

Thanks guys. The items you listed get checked regular. As for a service manual, It arrived a week after I bought the boat. I am a check list kind of person. I hate to think I missed something simple and ruin the boat. Just was always that way. I'm that way with my Jeep also. Thanks for you input. I have started my own list and your ideas have been added.

That is a real shame. One would hope an honest technician would have told you as soon as he/she opened the engine up.

Re: I Got a question

it was a just in case job DJ.. part of a planned maintainance routine.. i wanted two years good reliable high mileage.. so to speak.. use out of it.. i decided rebuilding it right at the start would achieve this as opposed to going thru the normal wear out period and having to do it anyway sometime during the two years.. the mechanic knew my intentions and simply rebuilt the thing as i told him to.. there never was any question of the engine being worn.. he did question my logic thow and thought it unusual.. he he

i recon i have bin thru three phases in my life..

1.. learning the hard way by not fixing things soon enough..

2.. the paranoia phase of fixing things that dont need fixing..

3.. kidding myself that i am clever enough now to know when something really needs fixing and when it dosnt.. he he

trog100
