Well, I found out for sure yesterday that my 86 Merc 60hp is toast.
After the foot fiasco, I decided to have the powerhead checked
before I went into replacing the mid section and rebuilding the foot.
Turns out I got low compression on the top cyl. (it figures)
Mechanic wants $900 to rebuild powerhead and another $300
to rebuild the foot!
He suggested a better option would be to buy another motor altogether.
And referred me to another marine mechanic friend who may have something.

Well we got up there, and sure enough the old feller had a 82 Johnson 70hp
that he had just rebuilt/restored with power tilt/trim (mine didnt have it)
and would take my old motor off and keep for parts and mount the johnson
with controls and all and be ready for the water for $650.
Does this seem reasonable? And what are reliability issues if any with
that particular Johnson model?

Newer motor, more HP, with additional power trim/tilt, and installed at half to cost to repair yours? If that motor checks out to be solid, I think its a very reasonable offer. I'd do it.

Actually it's an older motor 82 mines 86, but yeah im feeling along the same
lines of going ahead with the trade. However I would like some more
fellow boaters input 1st

Sorry, I read that and mixed them up. Either way, I still think putting money in the current one wouldn't be wise, and the 82 is good deal.

You should ask the mech if he'll give some sort of warranty on it (at least 30 but preferably 90 days) on major failures. Way to cover your you know what.

Man that sounds like a great deal. The T/T assemblies go for 3-400 on ebay, controls around 75, 2 hrs labor $140. Your already up to $550 and haven't even included the motor. I'd jump all over that.

While it sounds like a good deal If you dont know these guys I would ask around about them first. I would need to know what he calls "Rebuilt" as well.......
Many Shade tree mechs will call it a rebuild when all they done was throw some rings and Gaskets at the motor.......

Good Sounding Deal ! Just be cautious !
