Well, I found out for sure yesterday that my 86 Merc 60hp is toast.
After the foot fiasco, I decided to have the powerhead checked
before I went into replacing the mid section and rebuilding the foot.
Turns out I got low compression on the top cyl. (it figures)
Mechanic wants $900 to rebuild powerhead and another $300
to rebuild the foot!
He suggested a better option would be to buy another motor altogether.
And referred me to another marine mechanic friend who may have something.
Well we got up there, and sure enough the old feller had a 82 Johnson 70hp
that he had just rebuilt/restored with power tilt/trim (mine didnt have it)
and would take my old motor off and keep for parts and mount the johnson
with controls and all and be ready for the water for $650.
Does this seem reasonable? And what are reliability issues if any with
that particular Johnson model?
