I got screwed! rant

Well, they say that a sucker is born every minuett, well, I got took!, the day before Christmas

I've been looking for a late 1970's early 80's Caddy Coupe Deville as a project/ fun car for almost a year now. I bought one on ebay a while back, paid top dollor for it, it really was in mint condition and the jerkoff totaled it the night before I was gonna pick it up.

Now here I am almost a year later, my buddy found a '83 Coupe deville on cragslist up in Nasha, NH for $500 what the hell, I figured I was worth a trip. I was looking for a project, and willing to to some work, including a total repaint. Well, the car looked pretty good, very little rust, high miles (149,000) and its been sitting for a while. The guy selling it lives in the Red roof inn, he told me he didn't know a thing about cars, and it was to big for him and he didn't want it anymore, he looked like the type that should know a little more about cars then he let off to know, but whatever. I found that the seal on the tranny pan was leaking, no biggie. and one of the belts was off, the one that ran the fan and altinator, or the car couldn't be driven or it would overheat. I ran it and drove it around the parking lot, everything seemed ok.

I brought it into my buddys shop today and put it up on a lift, I replace the belt, flush the radiator and start her up. Oh @#$*!! pooring coolent from the bottom of the engine, I pull off the trannysheald thing and get a look at the bottom back of the block, and find a hole in it. Its an alum block, so their is really nothing I can do in terms of plugging it, the engine is junk.

So, now I got a car that isn't worth fixing. I called the guy I bought it from and asked for my money back, I got about what I expected with him telling me to screw, and saying that he sold it "as is as shown", he knew the block was cracked, I could tell he knew when I asked on the phone. I know where he lives, red roof inn, he's a bum. I told him he might wanna be sure he puts his deadbolt on, and that I'd be back..... but that was just to scare him , I know that I'm not getting anything out of him.

So, I got took! and I thought I was smarter then that . . .. :p

I'm gonna try to sell it as a parts car and get at least some of my money back. Some people just suck  The block was cracked in a way that you couldn't see it, and the car still ran, but you couldn't run it long because it had no coolent, so their was NO way for me to tell that the block was cracked at the time of the sale. I'm pretty pissed about it, but at the same time,, what did I expect for $300?

Ryan – sorry to hear you got taken. If you think it worth the trouble, you can take the guy to small claims court. “As is” does NOT preclude the seller’s obligation to disclose any known damage. There is no way the guy could not have known. Your case would be a walk in the park, it's fraud.

Now I’m going to be a little hard you because you also made an error. If you called me and told me I needed to put a deadbolt on my door you would have a serious problem. Without saying anything, I would hunt you down and cut your throat while you slept…I would do you before you ever had a chance to do me.

If you were to show up at this guys place with someone to serve papers for your small claims case, the guy is well within the boundary of reasonable to kick your teeth thru the back of your head as soon as he sets eyes on you, perhaps before you see him. After all, you did threaten him. As far as he knows, you and a buddy showed up to make good on that threat.

No more threats or anything, and I'm not going threw small claims court over $300, where more likely then not I'd lose anyway. The guy wrote right on the bill of sale it was sold as is as shown, and he'll just say that he didn't know, or that I damaged it by overheating it. I'm done with him, and he has no way of finding me anyway, he's got my cell number and first name, I've got his full name and address, and know what he drives, so if we wanted to play those games I'd win. I'm not worried about it, I just said that on the phone because he had a "haha I got you" attitude and I thought I'd set a little fear into him. I sized him up pretty good when I was buying it from him, he's quite a bit smaller then me, and seemed a little cracked out, after all, he was living at the Red roof inn! I could sh!t stomp him if it came down to it ;)

I'm just gonna cut my loses and get rid of the car ASAP, if I put it on ebay I might even be able to get more then $300 for it, a total sh!t box Coupe Deville a lot worse then mine sold for over $500 last week

wow, threatening him and making comments on a public site that "you know what he drives and where he lives", GET YOUR EMOTIONS IN CHECK AND CLEAN UP YOUR MIND BEFORE YOU DO SOMETHING ELSE STUPID!!! (yes I can yell because it's intervention time) Anger and writing like that is not the way to handle this. I'm serious, you need to do a gut-check and find out which direction you are headed in life.

As for reselling it.... you need to quote what you know about it or you aren't any better than him.

Take it easy pal, I said that I'm done with him and I'm just going to cut my losses, I stated what I do know, thats a fact, not a threat. the guy screwed me over, and if I can make him loose a few minuetts of sleep tonight, well good, maybe he'll think twice before doing it again.

Dirrection in life? Are you serious? get a touch with whats happening in the real world, and not just what you read on your computers. . . or at least grown some balls.

I dont know why I even post here

X2

This used to be a place to sit down and have a nice little chat. Now you ask for advice and get your head ripped off by people who don't even fully understand the situation. The people at the DMV are more fun to talk to...

I miss Iboats 2003.

Don't get mad - get even

And then write us from the afterlife.

I probably would have trusted the guy that lives in his van down by the river before a Red Roof Inn rodent.

Sell it piece by piece on Ebay.

Somewhere there's a guy working on a '50 Mercury saying "Man, I sure could use a steering column out of a '83 COupe DeVille."

Sell whats left over as scrap.

spots

This is the only defense I can see this guy having.
Maybe it froze and cracked without his knowledge.

Ryan, I'm not trying to wind you up, but you just got a couple of lesson about life.
One you don't know much about motors and two, you'r not as clever as you think you are.
But don't worry Ryan, grumpy old faxts like us have all made same mistakes - many times over.
The 3rd lesson you are yet to learn is to stop blaming others for your stupidity.
The 4th lesson is, never judge people as you have judged this guy, and I say this as some of us here could pass quite unfair judgment on you. But we won't.
If you were my kid, I would encourage you to show some balls and either fix it or trade out of it and get on with life.
Personally I would suggest you ring the guy and apologise for the threats you made. That was not acceptable.
Life is like a very big wheel. When you get to where we are on the wheel, you'll understand.
Cheers Ryan, and good luck to you.
Phillip

Re: I got screwed! rant

I'm curious Ryan on how long did you spend looking? I never buy from only looking at a couple of choices. Never get anxious to buy when you think your getting a good deal. Did you open the radiator cap? Seems to me there were a few things that you could have done to back away from this deal.

BTW Ryan, when people fist fight or whatever, NOBODY really wins. The one that may think he won only has to answer to the judge when he is asked to pay the medical bills. I bet medical bills will cost more than what the car did. Just cool it Ryan. A smart person will never give a warning on when he is going to act.

I got screwed on Christmas Eve. A guy stopped by my house while I was clearing some brush along my tree line. Said he had a flat on his work truck and needed to get home for Christmas. I gave him 30 and he said he would be back monday. Well, monday has came and gone and no money. This will just make it tougher on the next guy that needs my help. Live and learn friend, that is what life is about.

Maybe it's a freeze plug has went out?
Do aluminum engines have them?
I know there are about 3 or 4 back there where the tranny bolts on that are real hard to see.

Whenever you buy any vehicle (especially for $300) you are gambling. Kick yourself in the butt for making a bad bet and go on with your life. If $300 can cause you this much anger don't EVER have kids!

Edit: And I would suggest never getting married either. :D

Yeah, Ryan, I'm not sure you got screwed at all!

You learned a valuable life lesson, and it only cost you a couple of hundred bucks at most!

Consider it a tuition payment in the college of hard knocks!

Every one here has made a payment or three to this school--if anyone claims different, they are lying...

And I bet you will treat the next person trying to sell you a car that claims as his his residence some cheap motel, and insists that his vehicle just needs a new belt to be as good as new, why I bet you view what he tells you just a little bit more skeptically.

And for that info, you spent maybe a couple hundred bucks. A cheap tuition payment, in my view.

As you are learning, getting involved with anything that's got tits or tires is bound to lead to troubles.

Good Luck.

Lessons learned?

#1. If it sounds to good to be true....it probably is.

#2. You get what you pay for.

My 2 cents. ;)
