Hello

I hate yamaha motors I got one on line 1987 pro-v 150hp the 18.6 bass boat and trolling motor and trailer all for $2000.00 but the motor will only run for maybe 10 minutes when i got it the gas was bad in the system carbs needed cleaning i cleand them ,the stator i replace it with new one. I replast the starter with new one replacsted all spark plugs . For the hell of it . motor compression on all 6 is 100 or 110. But when you start it run ok. unitll it starts to warm up. Then the idle gets lower then it back fires and stalls .i clean the carbs clean fule tanks, replast fule filters on motor and boat. I 'd live to replace the wires on the coil packs . But i do not thank you can replace just the wires on the coil packs . HERE IS A PHOTO OF THE MOTOR http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=Ns9nwizqw-k&vq=large#t=79

Buy a manual and the test equipment for testing, then start testing. No need to replace parts that are working as they should.
Sounds like you need to go through the carbs again

That pro V is a really good motor, stop everything until you do a compression test. Once tuned up properly you should never have any problems as long as you do your maintainence and run you fuel stablizer, COMPRESSION COMPRESSION COMPRESSION!

Don't blame it on Yamaha

Buying a used engine is a crap shoot at best.
Why was that engine for sale? What happened to the boat? Did the boat sink and they saved the engine (well, almost) and put it up for sale? How long did it set unused outside under a blue tarp with no care at all. Even if it was a running engine, why did they replace it? Too small for the boat? If so, the engine you bought was probably run hard all it's life. It's also 23 years old.

After all that, how do you know it's not something simple like an air leak you your boats fuel system and has nothing to do with the engine itself.
What kind of testing have you done.
Oh, and there is a lot more to an engine than compression.

Yeah..Yammy are crap...

Mate I would get rid of it for a song (I could take it off your hands if you like...).

Seriously, I have owned a number of brands and Yammy is pretty much at the top of the tree for reliability, so get it sorted and enjoy.

Cheers

wow
poster buys a flea bay junker thats 23 years old knows nothing about outboards and complains?
anytime you buy craigslist or fleabay your not going to get a 1 owner cream puff.
thats the whole reason those sites exist. maximum exposure to potential buyers.
however you now own it.
to some basics, test spark, test compresion.

Sounds like you're doing great! You've got $2000 in the whole rig, that should translate to maybe $1000 in the motor, which actually runs, so guess it's not had a catastrophic failure, yet. You could afford to spend some money to get the motor running like a top and still only have 3 or 4 grand in the entire rig! Maybe get it fixed before it fries a piston or worse, then you'll really lose your investment! Good Luck!

No doubt amazing people will lay down thousands for a boat that "appears" to be in good shape without a pre purchase inspection, but that is the boating industry, small and misunderstood.
