I have 2 switches for tilt and trim, 1 works and the other one clicks

I have a 1975 inline omc 120 hp I/O motor and i just bought it about 2 weeks ago> I am used to an outboard motor. The Quesion is that i have 2 tilt and trim switches 1 is labeld for tilt and trim and the other, is just above the tilt and trim gauge on the dashboard, I just recently replace my tilt and trim motor because it was making a clicking sound, and i checked all the wiring and and all the soilnoids and they were all ok, however i found the to wirs for the tilt motor and tried it direct and found that the motor was seized up. got that fixed and no the motor goes prop goes up and down with the one button but the other button labeled below the guage just clicks am I doing something wrong??<br />and i thought maybe it was a fuse but not sure where to locate them??? Would appreciate all help<br />thanks dave manzer

Why do you need 2 switches??<br /><br />The one that is working does everything you need it to doesnt it?<br /><br />Are they both labeled the same???<br /><br />Maybe I'm missing something.

The boat came with 2 switches, the 1 raises and lowers the prop unit, but the other switch just makes a clicking sound like its doing nothing, isnt this supposed to be for adjusting the trim on the boat to smooth it out when the water is a little rough? I'm not sure

Does the needle on the trim gauge move when you raise and lower the outdrive??

no i watched and thats what concerned me. because i didnt see the needle move at all. Is there another motor that might be frooze up or i just missing something. I appreciate all your help thanks

And both switches are labeled exactly the same??<br /><br />What kind of boat are we talking about??<br /><br />Where is the clicking coming from??<br /><br />The switch or somewhere else??

Not sure I can help you but I have a 91 OMC Cobra. Last year I was sporatically hearing clicking when trying to trim down. This year it's not working at all and it has been suggested I try the solenoids since one was clicking last year. Or the fuses if I can find them. However, my tilt dash gauge has never worked and I saw that asked here - if it's working or not. What is the significance of it not working and where would I look to get mine working? Anyone?

One switch is for the outdrive. Should be on the dash. Second switch w/gauge is the trim motor mounted on the front of the engine. All 4 solenoids are locatrd on bank underneath the exhaust manifold. The front two noids control the trim and the back two control the outdrive. Now, the biggest problem, if not the motors, is the kickers on the noids not getting enough juice and it is caused by the master harness plug being loose of dirty . It's helded in place with a bracket and sometimes all you have to do is tighten it. Good Luck

The master harness plug is mounted above the started. There is two of them. The one I'm talking about is yellow.

Like Fatback says, on the older pre-cobra drives you had 2 switches, one for tilt and 1 for trim. The tilt was really only for tilting up the outdrive when it wasn't running, people used to use it to tilt it up and wear out the ball gears in a hurry, the trim switch actually raised and lowered the front of the motor which in effect trimmed the drive. My old model 800 actually had a couple of hydraulic rams at the front of the engine and thats what the trim switch operated.

If your boat is porpoiseing, put a dolphin on the outdrive and forget about your trim motor.If it isn't and you like the way your boat handles, then just leave things alone. If you're digging into the waves to much and not happy with your speed, you'll need to fix that trim motor. Good Luck
