I have a couple more 1996 Mercury 9.9 questions.

I have the subject motor running on a stand now, and it seems like I have most of the big bugs worked out. But I have a couple of questions.

1. With the motor running, I see exhaust coming out of a hole just under the motor cover on the back side. After it runs for a few minutes there is some water that will start to dribble down from the hole. Is this just condensation?

2. Right above the anti-ventilation plate is another small "rib" that wraps around the sides and front of the leg. On each side of the leg on the lower side of it there is water coming out while the engine is running. Not a steady stream, but more like a mix of water and air. I don't think it is exhaust, but it might be. Normal?

3. According to the manual there is an emissions placard on the engine. The sample in the manual has info like engine family, date of manufacture, idle speed, HP, CC, timing, spark plug type and gap, and valve clearances. On my engine, the HP is on the serial number sticker located on the transom brackets, and the valve clearances are located on a sticker on the top of the cylinder head, but the rest of the info is not around anywhere. I assume that my engine is earlier than the sample, but is there supposed to be any other stickers/placards anywhere? The info is in the manual I have, but not on the engine anywhere, so this is no biggie.

4. I am still in the process of obtaining a parts list for this motor, but in the meantime, is here such a thing as a master kit for rebuilding the engine, or perhaps a ring and valve kit? (It smokes quite a bit.)

5. Is it possible to change the recoil start to electric start? I will try to do some searches to find out, but if anyone knows . . . .

6. Did Mercury have two different 9.9HP motors that year? I am asking because I went to a boat supply to get some parts and the drawings for the engine that dealer had did not look like my engine. Especially the carb and intake which were completely different. The one I have is the "Bodensee" motor built by Yamaha, and I have had to go to a Yamaha dealer to get some of the carb parts.

Any other insights and opinions are welcome too.

Thanks,

Wayne
