I have an old trailer.... how to get a title?

I have myself an old trailer that a friend gave me. (somebody gave it to him, who got if from another guy that got if from a nother guy that traded it for a chicken) So there is no title, there is no bill of sale, there is no plate, and who knows who the origional owner ever was.

so, how do i register the damn thing? My frind said to take it down to the DMV and tell them you made it, they will ID it and issue you plates and whatnot.

is this the case?

anyone ever done it? is there hidden serial number on it somewhere that they will find and know I didnt make it?

opinions? thought? ideas? past experences?

do what your friend said to do. tell them you made it, no problem doing it that way.
also serial numbers are usually on a sticker that eventually falls off,
i engraved my trailer numbers when i bought my boat and trailer new.
just a sticker on my new trailer.

We do the same thing here in Ontario, Canada. Go to the license bureau and tell em you made it. They ask us the rough weight and color and then they give you the plates. I have done it many many times. Could be similar for you. I'd call em and ask em also. Tell em you made a trailer and what happens as all states/provinces are probably a tad different.

In New York it's very easy to register a trailer as home made. I called DMV and told them a similar story and they told me to say it's home made. You'll need to weigh it at a certified scale and take the form they give you to the DMV.

In TN I had to have my trailer inspected, they issued a VIN for it. All I got left to do is go to the Clerk's Office and get it registered.

So I towed it down to my friends house this morning, and backed it into his lawn. Then went and woke him up, heres how it went:

Ryan: Whattttttt?
ME: Im giving you a trailer...
Ryan: Oooooooookkkkkkkkk
ME: ok then.

-----30 seconds later-----

Me: Ill give you $5 for that trailer!?
Ryan: Done.
Me: Ok sign here, and fill this out: (already printed out a bill of sale and a statment of facks from the DMV website)
Ryan: You jack ***.


Took the paperwork to the dmv and explained it to them, they issued me a temporary registration & moving permit. And now all they have to do is put a tag on it. Worked great!
