I have been wondering

I am, aside from a boating noob and enthusiast, an automotive enthusiast (mostly classic / semi classic Porsche of which I own 2, my wife and kids refer to them as my girlfirends as I often spend more time with the girlfriends than the wife and kids).

and the first rule on the Porsche forums is "You do not add up your receipts".

Does the same apply to boats, specifically older boats, but I imagine boats of any age!

I am about to start a deck rehab on my boat, and believe this is the tipping point of money in being more than money out could ever hope to be (last spend on the boat was for repairs from an unfortunate accident and some upgrades).

Do you guys and galls keep track of receipts, or just file them away and never look at them again until selling to show to prospective new captains the documentation of work done...

Discuss...

I'm a gearhead and have more wheels on the ground than the average guy. I keep a receipt for everything, boat expenditures included.

"selling to show to prospective new captains the documentation of work done..." Buyer cares absolutely nothing about your receipts, other than possibly engine maintainance, just to be sure it was properly maintained.

To Do list:
[ ] Replace floor --- deferred maintainance
[ ] Relocate Fuel Tank --- deferred maintainance/ i wanted to.
[ ] Replace / re-layout seating --- i wanted to
[ ] Install marine radio --- worn out,static
[ ] install new stereo --- wanted ipod connection
[ ] Launch for 2010 boating season! --- regular maintainance.

as you can see the buyer is only interested in what it is worth today at this minute, and that you are willing to accept.

If you can get more out of the boat then what you put into it. You need to share you secrets.;)

I keep all mine just so when I sell it I can show what has been done and that probably that I am selling for less than I have in it :D I do my own maintenance and keep a log as well as a hrs out log book so I know roughly how many hrs are on what.

Floor, deferred from last year
Fuel tank, no maintenance needed, need to re-balance from PO install of the 350 CG is too far aft, trim tabs will work while under way, but waterline is too low aft when moored for kids swimming...
seating replace / layout is due to worn out vinyl and needing to remove the seating to get the deck out
marine radio, only have a hand held at the moment, want to mount a permanant mount in addition to the hand held
stereo, I guess the early 90s WAS still tape deck time... I don't own nor do I want an I-Pod
2010 season launch I added as my 2009 season was wiped out by wife in the hospital / recovering from surgery (March till November of last year)

I fully understand the concept of "it is worth what someone is willing to pay for it", my question was more a does anyone keep a running total, or just file it away for later approach?

Buy low, and do your own work... and if you need a new drive-train buying a worn out boat for the drive-train can be cheaper than buying a new drive and motor.. learn to do your own pre-buy inspection, and don't be afraid to move out of the comfort zone when doing your own work... it can be done, but is rough times these days.. and Pachangas are now in favor again, they are HARD to get a good deal on..

I'm tallying my restore expenditures. I'm enjoying comparing what I'm spending to what a new equivalent boat would cost. Even a nice used comparable boat would be about double.

I built a small boat one time. The materials weren't terribly expensive, but back then it took $8,000-$9,000 in beer to build a small boat. Beer cost now would be $0.

Keep only the receipts for services to show you did them as needed. Anything else is just beer money put to a better use!!
I was given the definition of boat when I bought my 1st one.

B - break
O - out
A - another
T - thousand

Re: I have been wondering

I keep a maintenance log, but just to keep track of when I did what. I stuff the old iboats receipts in a folder so I don't have to look up part numbers....:D

My boat is 49 years old. It has been in the family since new. It's been mine since I was 10. There will be no next owner, unless the boy plans to carry on the Whaler tradition. When I die, I will go "Viking style". They can put my body in the boat, fill the bottom of the boat with 100 gallons of the proper 50:1 mix, cast me off and light'er'up!
On last "up yours!" to the Fish and Game guys ! :D :D
