In all my years, I have never seen the really goofy funny stupid boat ramp antics you all talk about.

I have seen backing mistakes, and a forgotten plug a couple times, and guys slip off the tongue and get their feet wet. And a few arrogant jerks.

But that's it.
Could it be that Wisconsin boaters are just smarter, or more experienced?

Come down to Cheat lake in Morgantown WVa, you will see everything you hear about on these forums and a lot of scantly clad women. :myGFisa:

Re: I have never seen......

The worst I have seen was a guy showing people a boat to sell it, and starting the motor before launching without water................so I mentioned to the prospective buyers to beware. Mentioned that here and ...............was slightly flamed for having done so.

Other than that...........I agree with roscoe8)

:/ what the "H". Hey Mr., what part of California are you from? I usually launch in New Port and Huntington Beach. Our ramp is huge. Roughly 20 boats can launch/load at the same time.

Re: I have never seen......

It's not only at the ramp. We frequently have to hop in the vehicle when a customer backs-up to the shop door. There are only so many hours in the day. ;)

Not sure if it's still true, but Wisconsin has/had more boats per capita than any other state. Maybe that means we are more parcticed. More likely it just leads to more ramp comedy. :)

A few years ago I watched a guy run his motor for a few minutes before dunking it. I knew that was going to be a short ride. But apparently it lasted longer than I'd thought. We launched and had a nice day on the water. Came back and had to wait for the same dude. Boy was he in a bad mood! The hood was off and the block was obvously baked. Even worse he left his motor down in his rage and carved a nice groove in the blacktop with his now much shorter skeg.

I dunked the shop Farmall twice at the shop ramp at one job. Only had rear brakes and once I hit the slime line, it was all over.

It also depends on the peculiar characteristics of the ramp.

In Mukilteo, Wa., for example, there is a well used ramp that is subject to winds, waves, and currents that make it very difficult for those that are not absolutely in tune with the peculiarariries of their boats and trailers to not have serious difficulties.

I've seen a few enterprising young people don wet suits and help people load and unload their boats for tips. Not sure how they did, or how much they made, but whatever it was it was not enough, and it was a bargain to all those that recieved help.

I was one of those that got help, and if you were trying to get a 15' boat on a trailer by yourself at that ramp, you really appreciated their help.

Hey Tomato lord. Long time no read. How are the tomatoes doing? Got a late start here and mine are taking longer to ripen this year. Any sugestions? What variety do you plant. thecompanyatinboxdotnet Sorry for the hijack. No ramp incidents to report.

Re: I have never seen......

The little marina ramp near my house is pretty nice and has a very gentle slope. Except for the occasional tow in, it's pretty quiet.

Now the ramp on Wheeling Island is a completely different story. That ramp is steep......very steep. Combine that with the river current and boaters who like to show off their rigs by buzzing by while folks are launching, and you can see a lot of strange things. Mostly by folks, that even though they are experienced, just forget to do things.....like leave the wench strap connected to the boat until they get to the water at the end of the ramp......ouch!

Re: I have never seen......

We have a slip under the house so we only use the ramp to take the boat out for maintenance or hurricanes.

I always read those ramp stories and think how lucky I am not to have to fool with the trailer except for a few times a year.

The other night we finally pulled a SHT at our own slip.

We came home from a friend's place at about 1:30 AM. LF had to run upstairs to the bathroom. I shut the boat off, unloaded a few things and followed her upstairs.

6:30 AM our neighbor called to tell us the boat was floating down the canal by itself. I had forgot to tie it up or raise it in the slings. Since I can't swim LF had an early morning dip. Not a real happy woman at that point.

I told her it was her fault, she knows I don't work well without supervision.8)

Calicokid, those guys don't make it to the ramps.
I usually see them stranded on the side of the interstate.
That, and the fact that I don't do Minoqua, The Dells, or Green Lake. :D :D

GQ, all I meant was we have every thing in SO.CA I live in the High Desert and mostly launch in fresh water. I am going to fish for the bay bass in Newport though in a couple weeks here when I was a kid my Dad would rent the skiffs at Balboa and we would fish the bay there. But if you really want to see some stuff go launch at Havasu on a Holiday it is really Crazey
