I hit something

I have a 2000 Mercruiser Alpha one Gen 2 I believe. I hit something a little while ago. It tore the skeg completely off and ripped a 5x1 inch tear hole in the bottom casing which caused all the gear lube to leak out.
Is it possible to just buy a cheap outer casing for the lower half and put all the stuff from the interior of the old lower half in? this unit only has like 30 hours on it so everything inside should be good an the strike didnt damage any of the interior parts from what I can tell. hell i had to limp the thing to dock. I dont want to buy a new mer lower unit if i dont have too. Ive included a pic of where my skeg once was...

Welcome to iboats!

A prop shop may be able to weld that up when replacing the skeg. However, I wouldn't count on the internals being in good condition if you ran it without lube for any length of time.

Got super glue ????

I do not think there is any such thing as a 'cheap lower casing' . . . there would be such a thing as an 'expensive lower casing'.

So, it may be best to get a lower unit from SEI and go that way.

Got insurance?

Sorry to hear about your luck!
You can purchase replacement lower unit cases but when you add in the labor, seal kit, and cost of the casing iself you might as well pick up a new SEI lower gear unit for about the same price ($1200 +/-) and install it yourself in about 30 minutes.

NYBo-I think itll be fine. the thing is still leaking gear lube...days later. You should see my dam garage...its like a redneck slip an slide.
And I do have insurance Im just concerned with whether or not theyre gonna pay it or try an total it out an come an take it. Its only insured for 5 grand. The boat is worth 4 times that according to NADA guides. And I dont wanna lose it.

I don't know about your policy specifically, but normally if you are under-insured (and you are to the tune of 4x), then they will assess how much the repair would be, and pay 1/4 of that.... You would be up for the rest...

I suspect that gear housing is completely stuffed, I see the crack at the end, which means the housing has lost it's integrity (straightness and tolerances). To just get another housing and move everything over it going to be a lot more expensive than buying a brand new SEI gear housing, complete. On iBoats an empty gear housing is around $900, then you'll need the tools to take it apart and then some more tools to set up the gear heights. A complete SEI lower is $845... http://www.boatmotors.com/motorparts/index.cgi?pid=7530&flag=2

I doubt that an insurance company is going to total an entire boat over a broken LU.

And unless I'm mistaken, they couldn't force you to do anything....worse case, you could withdraw your claim.
