I have a 65 Evinrude big twin. Manual Shift with the lever on the side. Now bear with me cause I know ziltch about motors. Anyway, it seems with the lever all the way forward..It's in neutral. Middle is forward and back is reverse. I have a feeling this is not the way it's supposed to be. Sometimes with it forward, it will be in gear. I got this of a friend for 200.00 and want to put it on my duck boat. Don't have tons of cash to spend right now.

Good thing is it runs great. I just have a feeling this shifting will be the end of me. I do have a manual for it on the way in the mail.

My friend told me he paid 400.00 to get the shifing fixed...About a year ago and has not used it sinse.

Is it messed up...is it something I can fix myself. I'm pretty good with my hands :) IS there something I can check. I did take the 2 little plates off the side and checked the bolts on the shaft to make sure they were tight. They are and look brand new too. The lever is a lot sloppy though.

Please, any help wpuld be great

Thanks

Sloppy doesn't sound right at all. It's definitly messed up. Here's where you should be:

Pulled toward - forward - bolts in window (coupling) up.
Center position - neutral - coupling center.
Away from you - reverse - coupling down.

If the coupling is not following that pattern, the problem must be above it. The only thing above it is the bellcrank, which is attached to the lever's arm, just under the powerhead.
If the coupling seems to be doing what it should, then the problem is in the lower unit. Fortunetly that's an easy lower unit to work on. You can fix most problems with it with normal hand tools. I would bet real money that your problem is with the phillips screw on the fin on the bottom of the outboard (the skeg). If this is removed accidentally and replaced it can cause that sort of problem - it is a pivot for some of the internal mechanism (the shift yoke).
Careful with that coupler by the way. It's brass and it strips easily. One of the two bolts must be completely removed for it to decouple, so it is not adjustable in any way. It's also not particularly important for the bolts to be tight - it will still work properly with one half falling out.
Wait for the manual first. It prevents you from breaking expensive stuff, like your mind.
To sum up - it's probably an easy fix, and you can probably do it without disassembling anything. Once you know what it looks like inside, that is.
Good luck!

That shift rod is adjustable at the shift handle. At the bottom of handle you will find a 1/4 in. bolt with a square nut on the back. The hole the bolt goes through is slotted to make the adjustment. See if this bolt is loose.

That makes no sense how it could work that way.... I have the same motor but unable to figure out how that could be......

That being said if you decide to get rid of the motor I would like to talk to you about getting it for parts... especially the lower unit......

Please contact at cz@lakecom.com if interested. I am trying to figure out how to email you but I haven't figured that out from here....

At the bottom on the skeg, there is a philips screw.
This is not just a screw. It holds the lower end of the shift rod in position.Maybe the previous owner accidently took it out and dislodged the shift rod.
This will account for very erratic shifting behaviour.
