Hey all I am jumping over from the Force forum! Sold that boat anchor and bought the above engine. Besides the obvious..impeller, carb, plugs, is there anything else that is a particular problem with these engines..It has sat for 3 years and it appears verrrry clean! If you have any imput before I let the smoke out let me know! As always thanks in advance!

Hi Tiller
Get rid of the VRO and fit a standard fuel pump! The VRO is notoriously unreliable on these engines and can pack up with no warning. Ours packed up and cost us £1000 to have the top end rebuilt (in parts - I did the rest myself!)
I am sure that most people on here would agree with me on this. It is a simple bolt on job to fit a standard pump without a VRO - the only disadvantage is that you have to mix the oil manually in the fuel tank!

The fuel side of the pump is reliable. No need to change it. Just disconnect the oil side if you want to do away with the VRO... Do a search on "VRO". Plenty to read...

Wow most excellent info. I will search VRO and do the recomended fix. Other than that is it a reliable, good running engine? (Coming from a guy who used to run a Force....... a lawn mower would have been better LOL) Thanks again

I ran my 95 until last year. Only problem was an intermittent power pack. Relatively inexpensive fix.

Thanks for the imput....I do alot of seachs to avoid uneeded post but the one subject that seems very 50/50 is the VRO or no VRO? Mine is currently set up for it and runs well. Would it be one less head ache to eliminate it and hand mix? I know this is a seperate subject all together but let me know your feelings. As always thanks in advance!!!

Oh boy...here we go...another VRO debate!!

As you pointed out, opinions are about 50/50 on this subject with days of reading available on the forum re the pros/cons of VRO.

I'm personally on the pro side as long as you maintain everything. If the fuel pump appears to be an original 16 year old version, you might want to consider upgrading to a newer version as a safeguard.

Good luck.

and i'm with the con side, that says when you premix you know there is oil there, and not depending on a mechanical item that is known to fail.

Yeah... lots of differing opinions about VRO. Personally, I can do without them. I feel pre-mix is the most reliable lubrication system you can have on a 2 cycle motor (as long as you remember to pre-mix). I used to have the Evinrude equivalent of your motor. I bought it a few years old. First thing I did... replaced the VRO with a standard pump and never looked back.

Do what makes you more comfortable. for me, I bought an 89 50 & put a new OMS (oil metering system). That's what they call it now. Anyway, the new ones are very reliable and work great. If you want to spend the $ on it, go ahead, if not just disconnect and plug the oil side and you should be good to go.

VRO's/OMS's get too much of a bum rap and really shouldn't. with that said, I'm done adding fuel to the fire

LOL WOW I am more torn than ever. I think I am going to do the comfortable thing switch it to self mix. I am abit of a cowboy with this boat and I sometimes wonder into dangerous waters and a piece of mind increases my odds LOL. If you guys can do me a favor and look at my post inreference to my tilit and trim it would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
