I Just Can't Imagine what was being said back in 1945,........... With all the Liberals so involved with All this Bush Bashing,....About the Lies,+ Secrets....... I find it Hard to Believe that Truman wasn't Drawn,+ Quartered for the Manhattan Project............. Talk about Lies,+ Secrets............... JB,.... You were around back then,....Were you politically interested back then,.???...I realize that you were quite young.... What was the Big Whine about with all these Lies,+ Secrets,.??? It Seems to Me,....... That there HAS to be governmental Secrets,....... 'ell,..... If the Liberals had Their Way,........ Alquida would KNOW Everything Our Government Knows......... And,... That Ain't a Good Thing........ I Guess the Liberals Think that the Enemy just Doesn't read the Papers or watch Our News........

Sadly in the all out effort for headlines the media would sell top level secrets to anyone. But, if no one spoke to the media, they wouldnt know any better. Why dont we start charging these "leakers" with treason? Maybe that would end it. Ken

Back in 1945 the people of this country believed that the President had to know things they could never know and if he lied to avoid the enemy getting wind of what he was up to that was the right thing to do. We never questioned Roosevelt and we never questioned Truman about secrets. They were secrets. Korea was a different story. Don't ask me why, I have no idea. By 1952 Truman's approval rating was in the 20 percent range, at least partially because he fired MacArthur in 1951 but mostly over liberal opposition to the war (remember, Truman was a liberal Democrat). History has vindicated Truman and he is now regarded as a very good President. Eisenhower was pretty much forgiven for secrets and lies. We believed (again) that they were necessary. Johnson and Nixon both caught bloody hell over the war that Eisenhower and Kennedy got us into with the SEATO treaty. Both had approval ratings in their second terms as low as Truman. Reagan and Clinton both had second term periods of very low ratings from which they pretty much recovered. Reagan over secrets and lies having to do with Presidential policy and Clinton over secrets and lies having to do with his libido. The idea that all this uproar over Presidential decisions, policy, secrecy and even lies is something new is just short or non-existing memories. The only second term President who didn't go through it since Roosevelt was Eisenhower, and they all had lower ratings than GWB's current 37%.

I have to admit I don't understand even the point of your latest rant, Bondo. We all know there are secrets. Congress meets all the time in closed sessions when discussing classified material. That fact is certainly not a secret. We of a necessity must make election decisions based on what we percieve as the judgement of our leaders. Are you suggesting that Harry Truman was not subject to criticism? It is of course why the founding fathers chose to establish a government of three co-equal branches, as they feared too much power by any one branch of gov't. Our leaders swear an oath to protect and defend the constitution, and we have a right to expect them to do just that. As far as their judgement goes, that is open to criticism, and is fair game. I do get tired of this conservative trick that equates criticism to some sort of treason, or that suggests there is only one political idealogy capable of having any legitimate policies or ideas. That is how totalitarian regimes see things, and that should not be the goal of a representative democracy.

Seems like the media may not be the only problem we have nowadays. The BBC recently ran a story from the Chicago Tribune about how the internet had helped them identify over 2000 CIA operatives. Full story here I'm being niave because I wish the Chicago Tribune hadn't highlighted this but I'm quite sure our enemies welcome any help they can get

There was a story just last week that the LA TIMES printed revealing a new tactic our military devised to detect roadside IEDs. According to Military sources, within 48 hours of the printing, the insurgents changed something rendering our tactic inoperable. Within hours of the excrement hitting the fan concerning the terrorist surveillance program, phone calls mysteriously ceased. Back in the beginning of Afghanistan, some news outlet let loose that we were tracking Bin-Laden's satellite phone. Guess what happened. The press' right to tell is rarely balanced with the need to tell. The same goes for government officials, Congress and it's employees. What burns my chaps is that some of this chicanery is being done for no other purpose than politics. We have people playing politics with the lives of American men and woman. Whatever happened to "Loose Lips Sink Ships"?

Ahh, c'mon You don't really believe that stuff, do you?? Since the FISA law was well known and has been for some time, (1978, I think) any terrorist making phone calls and not suspecting his phone was tapped was a fool. Whether it was done legally with a secret warrant, or illegally without a warrant, should make little difference to a real terrorist. There is a common theme to blame the media for everything, and it is ridiculous. If you have super secret info on how to discover IED's better to keep it a secret, and not explain it to the press, rather than tell them and expect them to not report it.

What I got from JB's post is that the public has such a short attention span, that they are always willing to forgive presidential transgressions & dishonesty after awhile.... They have done it in the past & continue to do so the future..... Except for Bill's BJ that is..... The republican's cling to that like flies on excrement.... Time heals all wounds... I forgave Ronald Raygun & Ollie for Iran/Contra Hel!, I'll even forgive "W"..... 20 or 30 years from now....JK
