After pulling the boat out, getting the old motor off, putting the CMC power trim unit on with the regular size bolts to the transom, we get the new motor on the CMC, and guess what?

THE STUPID BOLTS ARE TOO BIG FOR A MERCURY!!!

I thought the standard size was 1/2"????? Thats what i used to get the CMC into the transom! Thats what I used for the last motor!

It looks like this mercury will only take 5/8" bolts thru the motor mount holes, and of course it was 6PM when i got to this step with NO WHERE OPEN to get the bolts...

Sorry, I just needed to vent about this.

Troubles come in three's. Imagine that a half inch bolt that won't go through a five eighth's hole.

Huh ???? The 1/2" bolts that you used on the old motor are too "big" for the Merc ? And you say the Merc only takes 5/8" bolts ? Its a new day today so take a look again, maybe the 1/2" bolts will fit now :D

That motor looks great. Did you ever get the compression sorted out?

The picture must be a 5/8" bolt trying to go through a 1/2" hole?

Does that CMC unit get controlled by the Merc control unit, or does it require its own switch at the helm?

Looking forward to seeing a photo of your boat/motor on the water. I'm sure all your hard work will pay off. Should go like a rocket.

The bolt i am holding is a 1/2" bolt... looks like a 3/8" hole..

I just realized i was saying 5/8th when i meant 3/8th... sounding really stupid.

The compression problem was never sorted out because I want to do a decarb, and i need it running for that.. with the compression i have, i shouldnt have any problems getting it to turn over....

The CMC gets controlled by both... I hooked it up to the engine harness's green blue and brown wires, and it controls it by ther merc control, then i mounted their switch in the back of the boat so i can lift it from there too.

Thanks for the reply :)

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a true description of the circumstances saves a lot of bandwidth. ;)

LOL.... I just called a merc dealer, he said they should all take 1/2" bolts. Then he went on to say that I wont be able to find any parts for my motor because he hasnt seen any inline 6 motors on long island in 20 years and they are dead... I told him i think i'll be fine, and he was like "yea, well your an optimist"...

Anyways, am I putting the bolts in the right spot? The 1st pic there is the holes behind where the power trim cylinders would have gone. but to the left of that 1st pic there are like 4 holes on each side that are big enough for 1/2" bolts.... Am I doing this right?

Mneumonic, The power trim brackets take two 3/8" SS carriage bolts each. The motor bracket bottom takes 1 ss 3/8" carriage bolt each(six bolts total). Use nylon lock nuts also.

If the aluminum slots in the PT brackets are worn, you may need to use hex bolts and washers instead of carriage bolts.

OK... I'm really confused now... because now none of the mounts line up... I assumed mercury used a standard bolt patten, but i dont see it. My old motor that was on there (Johnson 70) has what looks like a standard mount pattern:

See?

Those arrows measure out to be 6" down, 1" or so over. Which match up to the pattern on the CMC.

Now here is the new motor, which i cant seem to find a similar pattern to mount to.

Mneumonic, My '77 Merc does not have standard bolt mounting holes. It also does not have as many bolt holes in the transom bracket as your Merc does. When I installed my '77 Merc on a Jackplate, I needed to redrill all six mounting bolt holes. If I were you, I would try to match up the holes on the CMC unit with your transom bracket. It they match, hopefully there is room for you to drill holes for the power trim brackets. Of course, since you do not plan to use the power trim, you could simply remove the brackets, and get some orig. shocks.
