I'm working in my little tinny. Had to pull the old deck out and replace it, this boat had always left me longing for a live well so I figured it's now or never. I'm not to familiar with marine plumbing so I choose to shop locally at my local west marine where I could hold the parts in my hand and figure out what I needed.
Went to the first local store, their shelves were empty. I mean empty! Didn't have a live well pump, didn't have any barbed 3/4 inch thru hulls. So I hopped back on the bike and drove to the other local location, their selection was much better. Picked up all the fittings I needed, the pump I wanted and so on.
Lastly I needed a few feet of drain hose. I only needed 3' so I started searching through the remnants box. Found a 4.5' length without a price, just as the clerk came over too check on me. I explained it was more hose than I needed but I'd the price was right id do them a favor and take it off their hands, he said "I'll hook you up, and we won't have to waste it." Cool I thought.
So there we are at the counter checking me out. $113 worth of parts and he goes to ring up the hose, normally $4.59 a foot. He offers me the remnant that I chose out of the scrap box at a 5% discount! Are you kidding me?! I only needed 3', why would I buy more at a insulting discount?
I ended up telling him I felt insulted, and had him cut me a fresh piece of the roll and paying full price for it. I figured they could keep their piece of scrap...
Later that night I took a look around I boats, now confident in exactly what I needed, and still feeling insulted by a %5 discount. I ended up purchasing duplicate parts from Iboats, and back to the store the next day to return everything. I saved money and now feel better about my purchase.
I like to support the local stores when I can, but they have to at least try a little. What ever happened to customer service?
