Good Morning, just got my boat back from the mechanic, he put my powerhead on a sort shaft motor. Ok here is the problem, the starter turns over but the motor will not fire. I have fuel and I have spark at the plug wires. I have seen the boat run at the shop, but it will not run now. The neutral kill switch is working, the starter will not turn over with the boat in gear. I am getting pretty frustrated here, please help. Oh, the motor is a late 80's early 90's Mariner 200.

Is the choke working? If the motor has spark and cranks, and the timing is close it should pop. If not, the mixture may be too lean for a cold motor to fire it. Spray some 50::1 premix into the carb throats, and crank it good.

Thanks for the response. The choke is working, any other thoughts? The motor just turns over, does not try to kick.

This unit need to go back to the shop before it's tinkered up, judging by the explanation of "some sort shaft machine" you are not to mechanically inclined it may be a self induced problem so get to the shop for a second opinion. I know this is not what you want to hear when you want to go boating.

Laddies,
I never said "some short shaft machine". I believe you ,misread or mis quoted me. I did not know that this forum was for mechanics only. I am mechanically inclined, I mean I somehow managed to rebuild, rewire and reglass a boat with limited help. The mechanic merely put my powerhead on a short shaft motor because: a. the boat needs a short shaft, b. I needed a lower unit and could not find one, c. I work a 60 hour week and did not have the time to do the job myself.

I have been the benefactor of your expertise in the past, and would appreciate more now or in the future. I think you rushed to judgement in my case and do not agree with you. Have a nice day.

Thanks Laddies, I found the problem. The mechanic installed the in line fuel filter backwards. Turned it around and she started right up.
