Hey Gang - could use some help. Here is info and issue.

78 mercruiser 140 - partially restored boat looks good. Having some bogging and loss of power issues once load put on it - say around 1500rpm. Work I have had done to this point - carb rebuild, dist cap, plug cables, points, added a fuel filter, drained and totally cleaned tank, new fuel pump. Do not have fuel water seperator - could that be main issue. Has not sat more than a couple of weeks at a time with current gas in tank, however very hot here in Phoenix lately. Could condensation be an issue?

Any ideas on where to start looking would be appreciated. Just had gimbal bearing, u-joints and bellows replaced - thought I was in good shape for trip to Mead - thought wrong though. Runs great until power up. Also seems to get worse as engine heats up.

Thanks all

Have you checked timing? That would be one thing i would check. does it rev at all passed 1500?

Have not checked timing. I need to learn to do it - any tips would help. Come to think of it, what else is involved in a full tune up if you dont mind. Maybe I have been skirting the issue all together. I have been reading other posts on "mercruiser bogging" and is seems to be a common issue. Is there a way to test while not under load? I am about an hour from lake. PS - noticing backfire as well.

Thanks

+1...you need to verify the timing is correct, first step. And you need to verify that you are getting timing advance, per specs. You can have the timing 'dead on' at idle...but if the advance weights are hanging up, you will get the problem that you described.

See if one of your friends has an inductive advance timing light...and buy him a six pack!
