1989 90hp Evinrude VRO Crossflow V-4

Yeppers, I messed up when putting a new battery into boat and hooking up the cable's. I was not paying attention and hooked up Positive to Negative and Negative to Positive post. I heard a small pop under the hood of the motor and then some smoke came out. (No fire) Question is this! What did I blow?? Also, why was there current going to the Motor if the key was not in the box?
Do note! I did reconnect the cables correct and turned over the engine just to see if it would turn over. It did, however I did not try to make it run since it was not hooked up to water line. Any help would be thanked so much.

Jimmy

By turning over I guess you mean cranking the starter motor, not actually starting the engine. Power is always connected to the motor regardless of ignition switch postion. Similar to a car, there is likely a starter relay n stuff. You can see those big power cables going to the engine, not the ignition they are not normally fused. Actually starting the engine will be the test. I know on my motor (not same as yours) there is a fuse on the ignition system, but I assume this would be energized via the ignition sw. You may have some other accessory fuses in there somewhere - poke around. Good luck.

Duck, that is correct, just turning over the engine is all I did to make sure it still worked. But for something to pop and then smoke when I connected the wrong leads to the battery post, means something had to blown and I do not want to find this out once I am on the water. Thanks for reading and replying back.

Jimmy

YOU BURNT THE RECTOFIER.maby not the stator . if it cranks check see if it is charging . ther was a post last week on doing that . never hook up backwards or take the cable off while running .the rectofier is 30 or so dollars at napai think .dont have the bill handy just bought one. if you have a manul it tells you how to check it . papasage

Hi Jmorrel
I don't know what else to tell ya. These Guys pretty well spell it out. You probably nocked out the rectifier maybe more. How are we to know? Get a manual and perform the tests, find and the damage. I would test and determine before running the motor to try and prevent further damage. Let us know what you find. If you got smoke something was on fire. This shouldn't be too hard to find.

Re: I messed up... Pop and Smoke...

(Papa, I am in North Ga., at Lake Allatoona and Pine Log Mountian. I grew up in Tifton just down the road from you.)
Alcan, I decided to run the motor with the garden hose connected. It worked but still there as to be something. I am thinking the rectifier as well, but I do not know how to run a test on electrical system. I just have never played around with electrical testing. Could you or someone explain how to hook up a meter to test this?
Thanks Papa and Alcan....

Papa, thank you so much. Hope you have a good evening. I will look for you tomorrow. Would love to talk to you and what all is going on in that area now. I still have relatives that live there. Use to go to lake Blackshear all the time.

put meter on dc reading then hook correct wires to battery it should read 12.60 volts or so then start engine if volts drop below 12.60 volts when running you need to replace rectifier
