I've posted up on a couple of the other forums. I have not been able to figure out why I can't get a tach to work w/ my 1967 650 Merc.

So, I thought I see if any of my fellow SC'ers have any ideas or, have had the same problem I have had.

The tach I purchased is NOS on Ebay for $14 so its not the end of the world if I try something else.

Post from Merc forumhttp://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=485904

Read my last post on my restoration thread June 12th. Photo's of Guage included.http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=364174&highlight=nassau

Do I pitch the guage and try a different one?? or does anyone have any suggestions??

Hope to get back on the issuse when I get back from taking the wife and daughter to Sunny Florida for summer vacation.

Been super busy (which is a good thing I suppose), been trying to read a few posts now and then. I've only had the boat out once and thats just not enough:( .

Thanks in advance,
hope you can help

you should have a tach wire off the engine to connect to. I think you will have a power wire and ground and tach wire.
I just replaced my tach which was reading lower rpms that actual with one from Shuck's for about $35, plastic and should not rust, but mine is kept out of the direct sun and rain. I started my boat up a few weeks ago and new tach works fine.
May be connect the tach closer to the engine you might have a tach wire that is broken, make sure you are powering the tach with 12v, make sure the ground wire has a good connection.

I wish I could help you tgp. When I added a tach to my '73 Johnson it was a simple as connecting a standard Teleflex tach to a gray wire found in the control box. My '81 is even easier because there's a pig tail connection on the outside of the control box for a tach.

I thought it seemed easy too. Tried it both ways, from the plug on the Merc control and from the Stator wires. I also ran a seperate wire by passing the wire harness from the engine to the tach. check all my connections. Still no go. I'm baffeled.

I guess I'll need to try a different tach. Maybe stop down at the Boat Shop and see what the Mechanic says.

Thanks Guys!
