Last week I bought a Johnson 9.9 hp motor, model # 10R75C / serial # E4178758. I asked the forum the basic questions on age of the motor and oil/gas mixtures, to which Boatist replied with the necessary info. To that extent I followed Boatists recomendations and the motor started on the third pull and ran fine in a tub of water. My question this time is the particulars of filling the lower unit with lube.

On the side of the motor as the shifter on the lower unit there is a hole with a screw that takes a straight bladed screw driver located adjacent the exaust ports. Lower on the unit there are two holes one with a straigt screw as above and one that has a phillips head screw. The lower screw is located below the prop shaft housing just above the skegg.

My question is are the two holes with the straight screws the fill hole (upper hole) and the "run out when full" hole (lower hole)? If so it seems that there cant be a lot of oil at shaft level. It only took a couple of squeezes of oil for lube to come out the lower hole. On my 7.5 hp game fisher (1980 year model) the hole that oil comes out of when full is above the shaft housing. I just want to be sure that the lower hole is not the drain hole, if so I am not filling the lower unit with the proper amount of oil. Are any on line manuals available to look at untill my books arrive?

Sorry about the length of the post and I hope I am making sense in my wording of the question.

Thanks for any help.

Mike
