Hi, I have an Angler 173F. It is 17`3?? by 7?5??.
http://www.misterboat.net/images/ANGLER_173F.jpg

The max gear + people weight is 1150 pounds.
The max people is 4 or 500 pounds
I presently have a very old Johnson 70hp that is 235lbs.

There is a good deal I can break on 2000 Yamaha 4stroke 115HP that is 412lbs
Problem is the recommended max is 90hp.
I am walling up the back cuz the transom height is too low for the specific conditions of the Ungava Bay. So I think the extra weight might not facilitate backwater on low or no speed.
Can the weight difference between a 90hp and 115hp truly affect safety and cargo capacity?
Are the manufacturers specs conservative? Is there leeway?
Will the extra speed affect the integrity of the boat?
Anything else I should know?

Most people in the Arctic have freighter canoes or aluminum boats so I have very little input on the subject.

Please help

You control power with your right hand, but it is the weight balance that might make this very unstable, unsafe and possibly unusable. Have a 250 pound friend stand on the transom with your original OB there and you'll see why this is a bad idea. Remember the extra weight is even further aft so that's why I said 250 at the transom.

Does it give an engine weight limit recommendation? The weight and HP limits are an AND, not an OR value. I see a lot of people ignore the HP if the weight is within specs. This is not recommended. If the max. is 90HP, then I would stick to at or below the HP rating. That is a big jump in weight and exceeding HP on top of it is asking for trouble.

It's my bet that the stated HP rating was written to a 2 cycle outboard of the same age. as far as the HP difference not the problem you are facing example the Merc 90 and 115 are physically the same such as a 305 chevy vs a 350 it's the 2vs.4 cyl. and the physical weight the is the issue I''l bet you could go up to say a 140 Johnson before coming close to that 115 Yamaha. I'm in puter mood so lets see what can find out about the max transom weight.

Thanx for the infos, I'm thinkin Evinrude E-tech 90 cuz, Low maintenance (essential far North), good on gas, small and lighter (320lbs).

Found a 2006 model with only 20hours with basic controls for 7000$ canadian, crated. Is that good?

Welcome to iboats. The e-tec 90 is a great motor and would fit your needs nicely.

Have you looked at the outboards available here on iboats? http://www.boatmotors.com/rebuilt_outboard_motors/

Did you know that a newer 75 hp such as the mercury optimax that is on iboats is equal to an old (pre 1984 90hp Johnson or evinrude)....... a newer 75 hp will be a substantial kick in the transom and a newer 90 hp will get you flying.

If your reason for an upgrade is to upgrade your fishing boat then a 75 will work nice...... if the majority of it's use was as a tow boat for water sports then I would go larger to the 90. The 75 will get better MPG vs the 90 too.

I realize you are not brand specific however, I would choose a brand that has a support network near you.

Is this a Test :p only kidding  Seriously I just find it funny that when you Google your boat This site meaning iboats is the first dealer listed.

here's a couple of notes Yam 115 = 414 lbs. Yam 90= 369 lbs. the Evenrude E tech 90 = 320 lbs.
I will offer on a particular brand but HP vs. weight remains a constant
