I never actually tried to take one of those apart, but it looks like there is a small allen screw in there to lock it down. The only thing I don't understand, is how such a tiny allen screw can be torqued down hard enough to bend the cable, without the hex been wasted. That cable is pretty tough stuff.

And therin lies the difference between OEM and aftermarket cables. Or at least used to be----I don't know if it has ever been corrected or not. The OEM OMC cables had the wire end annealed for about 3/4". That made it soft enough for the setscrew to properly kink it. Aftermarket cables are not (were not) annealed and were impossible to kink. Without the kink, the durn thing slips. No big deal, I simply annealed them myself.

jkg, if you have the 2 setscrews loose or out, simply pull harder. It should come out of the rack gear. The kink is holding it. When you install the new one, run one setscrew down against the wire, then continue turning it 3/4 to 1 turn. That will kink the annealed wire. Now tighten the second setscrew, which will securely clamp it.

So lets get this straight. There are 3 different Simplex controls, two pre-1979 and one after 1979. Lets start by figuring out which one you have. Look at these two pre-1979 controls and tell us specifically what you need.

"Round Ball Knobs" control--- http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/frankr_photos/TwoLeverRemoteControlSingleEngine-1.jpg

"Shaped Knobs" control--- http://i155.photobucket.com/albums/s311/frankr_photos/10RemoteControlSingleMotor.jpg

Do you have a pic of what you need? Just post it on iboats - don't bother using a hosting service. The link you posted above comes back no good...
