the motor is a 97 force with the Mercury lower unit. the boats been sitting about four months and some oil is leaking from the prop. i have owned the boat about a year. i haven't had any problems or done any maintenance to the boat till now. im going put a complete reseal kit on the lower unit. are there any parts that ill need besides the ones that come in the seal kit and a water pump kit? also i need to know if there are any tricks to get the seals off the drive shaft or the prop shaft. also will i need to remove the wear sleeve for the drive shaft.

oil leaking from prop could be the un burnt 2 stroke oil coming from the exhaust which is normal, I would check to see if you have water in the gear oil before getting into the gearcase:noidea: in fact if you've done no maintenance I would start by draining it to change it, see if its milky from water intrusion

Yes, drain and look at the LU oil first. You may need a water pump but that down the line a bit.

i have checked the oil and it does have water in it. the oil thats leaking smells like gear lube. i order the seal kit for my lower unit, new water pump, and the one seal from the water pump kit that isn't included in the lower unit seal kit.

You may also need the tool to change out the prop shaft seal.

I've done some home work and i think the seal your talking about is the one behind the carrier bearing. if so, i think i can sacrifice a screwdrive to make a tool and use that to beat the seal out.

the seal I'm worried about is the one on the drive shaft that seals the top of the lower unit. i haven't taken any thing apart yet, but i think the seal is down in there a ways. I'm not sure how to get it out. the manual i have shows a wear ring going on after the seal, and says to replace the wear ring if its removed. this is the point wear im thinking i may need to hire a pro.

The upper seal is general no problem, the prop shaft seal requires a special tool to pull the carrier out first.

The seal you are worried about will be cake. The seal is actually in a cover assembly UNDER the water pump plate. Trust me, it is much easier to remove the cover and change the seals (opposing seals...back to back) on top of your work bench. Then, simply change out the O ring, and slide it back on the drive shaft. Install the water pump base plate and seal, and keep working upward.

NOW, changing the prop shaft seal will be the issue. There is a good video on YouTube about this very issue. It shows how to change the prop shaft seals without removing the bearing carrier. Works great, and saved me a ton of headaches.

Also, be sure to change out the (fill and drain screw) crush washer seals. Don't take it for granted. Water can easily get past the worn-out little blue seals.

It depends on the LU, but the ones i have owed are like the old 4 x 4 spindle sockets.
