I am in the process of rebuilding a mercarb part#: 13899670 date code: 0Y03. It is off a 1987 Mercuiser 5.0.
If have consulted 2 different mercruiser manuals and 1 service bulletin and there are discrepancies among them.
I have 1987 MC shop manual (5B) courtesy of Don S. I also found a newer MC shop manual that covers my carb at this link: http://www-alt.mercurymarine.com/mnetdata/SERVICE/CRUISER/Servmanl/17/17b5r2.pdf
I have also found a 1999 service bulliten at: http://www.marineengine.com/discus/messages/12486/97_08-248939.pdf
Question #1 ? What is the correct main jet size for my carb?
The 1987 manual from Don S calls for 170s, the newer manual calls for 165s, and the service bulletin calls for 185s. When I rebuilt it last season I put in 185s but it ran rich.
Question #2 ? What is the correct float drop?
The 1987 manual calls for a float drop of 44.5 mm while the other sources call for a float drop of 27mm.
Question #3 ? What is the correct accelerator pump for this application and do I need a check ball underneath it?
The 1987 manual describes what I believe is reffered to as the ?old style? 2cc accelerator pump. Underneath the old style pump the 1987 manual indicates that there is supposed to be a retainer clip, strainer and check ball. When I opened up my carb it had with new style pump and no retainer, strainer or check ball. Am I OK using the new style pump w/o the check ball. The boat had no problems accelerating.
Question #4 ? Should install the check ball, spring, and retainer clip underneath the venture.
The 1987 manual does not show any check ball under the venture while the newer manual does.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
