Hi guys first timer. I have a 86 Johnson 90hp, j90tlcdc vro it's leaking gear oil from the prop shaft. It's leaking bad enough that when I tilt the lower prop down it starts dripping out. I see the bolts on the bottom of the carrier, and I'm assuming I need a puller to get it out, but I'm not sure if I have to remove anything else, or how to reinstall the carrier and what seals to replace. I'm having trouble finding a service manual, and I'm considering just taking the lower to a mechanic. I appreciate any advice. Oh, and for some reason my gear oil is dark blue, I've never seen that before. I'm not sure what kind of oil that is.

I'm looking at the diagram, the fluid is coming from the bottom of the bearing carrier, and it looks like the only thing that would seal that is a $2.31 o-ring. Everything after that is retaining rings, keepers and thrust bearings

If it is leaking oil, it was letting water in. You could have something much worse than just a bad o-ring.

I recommend pulling the foot and exchanging it for a rebuilt one.

First you need to male sure that it is gear oil and not just unburned oil and gas since that is a thru-hub exhaust system. as said above if it's leaking that bad you should have water in your gear oil;do you? Also, that oil should smell "gassy" if it is unburned 2 stroke oil. Just trying to save you from unneccasry work. Good luck

There is water in the lower. I have already established that. My gear oil is blue, which made it difficult to know it was leaking gear oil. I guess nobody here knows how to remove a carrier then?

It is fairly easy to remove the carrier.--------Remove the 4 screws.-------Install 5/16" threaded rod in the 2 holes and use a strongback and end of the prop shaft to remove it.------Pushes right back in on re-assembly.---Put new o-rings on the 4 screws.

I usually just remove the 4 screws, then grab the carrier with my pliers and pull while giving it a bit of a twist.

while the carrier is out, replace both rear seals, the o-ring, and the 4 small o-rings under the screws.

OMG!!! I have NEVER had one come out that easy...never. They are always corroded and salted in solid. I wish it was that easy for me.

You guys and your freshwater motors......:facepalm:
